BEST EVENT FOR JANUARY: F-LIGHT FLORENCE
Until January 8
All across Florence there are individual light and video mapping installations, lighting up iconic
monuments and memorialising historical events of the city. Over Christmas, the video mapping of the
Ponte Vecchio, presented to a soundtrack of Ludovico Einaudi, was redesigned to include the message
“STOP TERRORISM” after the devastating tragedy at the Christmas markets in Germany. You can still
see eight of the city wide installations presented until the end of the first week of January.

LOCATION ALONG THE ARNO RIVER
The apartment is situated at the beginning of Lungarno delle Grazie which runs along the north side of the
Arno river from the Ponte alle Grazie to the Bibioletca Nazionale. It is within a short walking distance

BEST EXHIBITION FOR JANUARY: LAST CHANCE TO SEE AI WEIWEI AT PALAZZO
STROZZI
Until January 22
A dissident artist with a leading voice, Ai Weiwei is known world-wide as much for his challenging
contemporary art practice as for his political activism. Ai Weiwei will be the first artist to exhibit across
the entirety of the Palazzo Strozzi spaces, presenting a series of new and major works from the façade of
the building and the courtyard to the piano nobile and the Strozzina gallery. Mirroring the artist’s
relationship between tradition and modernity, key works will be hung in response to the architecture of
the Palazzo Strozzi, a 15th century palace built as a political statement, and is considered to embody the
history of the city of Florence.
This major exhibition will include key monumental installations, sculptures and objects, as well as videos
and photography series produced throughout his career. These range from his years living in New York
1980s and ’90s when he discovered his ‘masters’ Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, to the large iconic
assemblages works from the early 2000s consisting of objects such as bicycles and stools, to his recent
controversial and engaged works such as portraits of political dissidents built with LEGO bricks, and his
projects on migration in the Mediterranean region.
Over the past twenty years, Ai Weiwei has become a leading voice on the international art scene and
China’s most famous living artist. Known for his political activism and meticulous artistic research, Ai
Weiwei has also become a symbol of resistance against censorship. The show will offer the opportunity to
explore Ai Weiwei’s creative genius but also to understand his personal narrative, offering critical insight
to Ai Weiwei’s ambiguous relations with his native China. Ai Weiwei denounces the inconsistencies and
gaps between the individual and the community in today’s world and has a profound sense of belonging,
as illustrated by his use of traditional materials and techniques. Equally, a strong sense of rebellion
informs his interpretations of traditional Chinese images and metaphors.

BEST FESTIVAL FOR JANUARY: LA BEFANA
January 6
On January 6, La Befana arrives in Florence and this is Italy's traditional day of gift giving. The name
Befana appeared historically for the first time in writing in a poem by Agnolo Firenzuola in 1549. She is
portrayed as an old ugly woman dressed in dark rags who, during the night between 5th and 6th January,
flies over the houses riding her broom and entering through the chimneys (or in modern apartments,
through the keyhole). Into the socks that children left hanging near the fireplace she leaves candies and
gifts for good children, black coal (actually black sugar today), garlic and onions for the bad ones. Parents
of course would always include some coal over the gifts, to trick their children. And the night before the
family leaves some wine and cakes for the old lady.
In the Christian tradition the name "Befana" is a popular version of the Greek term “Epiphany", which
was the festivity following Christmas commemorating the visit of the Magi. According to the legend the

three wise men on their journey were stopped by an old woman with a broom who asked them where they
were going. They told her that they were following a star that would lead them to a newborn baby, and
invited her to come along. But she replied that she was busy sweeping and cleaning and did not go. When
she realised her mistake, her regret was so great that she continues to wander about Italy and on the
Epiphany (January 6, when the Wise Men finally found the baby Jesus), begins rewarding good children
and disappointing those who were bad.
So celebrate with your favourite children, and watch out for gift-giving old ladies in the streets of
Florence.
BEST PARADE FOR JANUARY: THE THREE KINGS ARRIVE IN FLORENCE
January 6
Epiphany, January 6, commemorates the arrival of the Three Kings in Bethlehem. In celebration of the
Epiphany, a "Cavalcade of the Three Kings" takes place in downtown Florence on the morning of January
6. The event is a commemoration of an ancient celebration taking place in the city as far back as 1400 of
the arrival of the three kings to the manger where Jesus was born. On this special occasion, a parade in
beautiful Renaissance costumes starts from Palazzo Pitti and winds its way through the city, passing by
Piazza della Signoria and arriving at the Cathedral and Baptistery in Piazza del Duomo. The
Sbandieratori, or flag-throwing company, of the Uffizi also participates in the event, enchanting the public
with their skill in throwing, exchanging and waving their flags in Piazza della Signoria. The procession
begins at 14.15 from Palazzo Pitti.
BEST MARKETS FOR JANUARY: ALL OF THEM!
Florence is full of bustling markets that are a great place to find bargains, enjoy the atmosphere, or spend
the day browsing extraordinary antiques, artisan crafts, and delicious typical foods that Florence has to
offer. Florence's markets are an integral part of local life and can be found throughout the many districts
of the city. Here are some of the most frequented markets in town:
San Lorenzo Market
The San Lorenzo market has it all, but is best known for its selection of leather accessories such as handbound journals, wallets, belts, and larger leather items such as hand crafted jackets and fur. The San
Lorenzo Market also has a great selection of souvenir clothing, stationary, ceramics, shoes, vintage
clothing, and scarves. If you are looking for a deal it is most likely that you will find it here! Don’t be
afraid to bargain for a better price.
When: 9:00 - 20.00. The hours may vary slightly depending on the weather and season.
What to buy: Leather goods, jackets, scarves, stationary.
Where: Piazza San Lorenzo
Mercato Centrale
Florence's central market, Mercato Centrale, was once the main shopping centre in Florence and today it
is still the place to find the freshest products and produce. There are stands selling everything from all
kinds of fowl, meats (including wild boar), fish and Tuscan products including wine, biscotti, cheese, and
salami. Mercato Centrale also has a handful of restaurants located inside that offer fantastic fresh meals at
very inexpensive prices. Now, on the upper floor is a cornucopia of shops making ready-to-eat specialties
and is open from 10am to midnight.
When: 07:00 to 14:00?Closed Sundays and public holidays.
What to buy: Food (both raw ingredients and prepared dishes to take away or eat at the market).
Where: Piazza del Mercato Centrale, San Lorenzo neighborhood (Also check out the smaller, but similar,

Mercato Nuovo and the Porcellino
Mercato Nuovo has been around since the 11th century, and was first known as the straw market. A
smaller market, it is located beneath the loggia and sells leather goods, t-shirts, scarves, and souvenirs,
though the prices are slightly higher than the Mercato of San Lorenzo. It is often referred to as the
“Porcellino” market, for the famous bronze statue of a boar, “il Porcellino”, located on the south side.
Legend has it that if you rub his snout and put a coin in his mouth, you will return to Florence. After years
of rubbing, the bronze needed some cosmetic surgery after nose became too thin! You can see a brief and

If you are looking for arts and crafts, antiques, or house wares, this is a great place to look!

Fierucola Farmer's Market in Santo Spirito
The Fierucola is not just your typical farmers market, it features artisan crafts, as well as organic and
biodynamic produce created on a small scale. You’ll also find oils, jams, wines, and baked goods. The
Fierucola market is a feast for all of the senses and is definitely worth visiting!
When: On the third Sunday of the month

Mercato delle Piante
My favourite market for buying seasonal plants, flowers, and herbs. Located beneath the archways along
Via Pelliceria, enjoy the burst of colour and nature that brightens Piazza della Repubblica each week.
When: Every Thursday from 10.00 to 19.00

Fortezza Antiquaria
At this popular antique market you can find almost anything old your heart desires. Located in the
beautiful square beside the Fortezza da Basso, you’ll find everything from large furniture pieces to old
records and coins.
When: Every third weekend of the month (on Saturday and on Sunday)
Where: Piazza Vittorio Veneto
Mercato delle Pulci, now in a new location.
Here you can find furniture and vintage objects from the past like prints, coins and jewellery. It's worth a
trip if only to get insights on Italy's past through the artefacts displayed in these cluttered stalls.
When: Monday through Saturday 09:00 to 19:30 and on the last Sunday of the month.

Le Cascine Flea Market
Le Cascine market is situated in the very beautiful Cascine Park, and is worth a visit just to admire the
beautiful views. After a day of walking through the cobblestone streets and awing at the amazing
architecture it is hard to believe that a green park such as the Cascine exists so close to the city centre.
The Cascine Market is the biggest and cheapest market in town! If you're searching for fruits, vegetables,
clothing, house ware stands, antiquities, shoes, vintage, or anything else you can think of, this is the place
to come!

Sant’Ambrogio Market
Located in Piazza Ghiberti and Piazza Sant’Ambrogio, the market is both inside and outside. Take a walk
and find out fresh fruits, vegetables, clothes, flowers, shoes and stalls appliances, then enter if you are
looking for fresh meat or fish, pasta, general groceries or good cheeses. Are you hungry? Then you should
sit at the inner restaurant (good and cheap). The market is open every weekend (except on Sunday) from 7
to 14.
BEST CONCERT FOR JANUARY: NOTTE AL MUSEO - IL SESTETTO STRADIVARI AT THE
MUSEO DEL DUOMO
January 26
The Night At the Museum program has returned, and there is a sensational performance for the January
evenings. The Sala del Paradiso is the heart of the museum, and will host six concerts across the season.
This month, the Sestetto Stradivari of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia present Brahms and
Tchaikovsky masterpieces.
The concerts are free entry, subject to availability of seats available exclusively on reservation to be made
in person at the concierge of the Art and Culture Centre (Piazza San Giovanni 7) starting on Thursday of
the week preceding the date of the concert.

“Contemporary flavors in Piazza Cestello. The hottest new opening in Florence is without a doubt this
restaurant headed by popular chef Simone Cipriani, formally of Santo Graal. Inside, you’ll find a
contemporary, intimate atmosphere. With a small drawer at every table with your “tools” (forks, knives
and spoons) to help you along what will certainly be an interesting gastronomic affair. I went with Nico
for his birthday dinner and we opted for the five-course tasting menu (55€) which was absolutely
phenomenal. The cuisine is inventive and creative, imagine a take on Tuscany’s classic “pappa al
pomodoro” called “papa Mary” with bloody mary elements of horseradish gelato and a spritz of vodka.”

FLORENCE WINTER SALES
While some sales have already started, after the Epiphany of January 6th all the stores of Florence will
begin their major sales to clear out their Autumn and Winter stock, in order to make room for the new
season arrivals. You can expect savings of at least 50%, which often reach 70% towards the end of the
month as stocks dwindle. It’s the perfect time to grab a few last minute winter coats to help survive the
winter chill of January!
TOSCANA WINTER PARK: FIFTH EDITION
November 26 - February 26
Go skiing, ice skating and tobogganing on the banks of the Arno at Obihall. After heading down the 80metre piste on skis or a snowboard or trying your luck on the ice rink, indulge in some après-ski at the
bars, enjoy a hearty meal at the restaurant or join in the many children’s activities. The park will remain

PITTI FASHION COMES TO TOWN

are aimed at specialist fashion buyers (you may be one), Florence knows they are here because the streets
are full of fashionable folk. January is the month that fashion events, parties, and shows spill out of
various venues in the historic centre, and is a heavenly time for people-watching in the streets. Look out
for local bloggers covering the fashionistas and the mad styles on show as people travel to and from the

PITTI UOMO 91 – From the 10th to the 13th January, Pitti Uomo will come back with its 91th edition

PITTI BIMBO 84 – From the 19th to 21st, Pitti Bimbo will come back with its 84th fashion week full of
events and shows dedicated to children's clothes. Over 500 collections are expected this year, including
about 200 from abroad: the collections will be showcased through an area of 47.000 square meters.
PITTI FILATI 80 – From 25th to 27th, Pitti Filati returns in its 80th edition. Pitti Filati is the fair for the
excellence of knitting yarn and fabric at which all the new international trends are shown.
VINTAGE SELECTION 29 - The Vintage Clothing, Accessories & Designer Objects Fair
Feed your vintage habit at Stazione Leopolda from January 25th to January 29th. Vintage Selection is not

to make this a true walk through the past. This edition of Vintage Selection will fascinate exhibitors and

ON THE FIRST SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH

On the first Sunday of every month, Florence opens up all of its state and civic museums free for
residents of the city, or people born here. It’s a fantastic initiative to reward the people who call Florence
home, and make it easier for them to enjoy the city’s treasures.

EXHIBITIONS IN JANUARY
BOTTICELLI ROOMS REOPENED AT THE UFFIZI
The latest rooms to be reopened at the Uffizi Gallery this past week are the Botticelli rooms and rooms
dedicated to the Early Renaissance. This latest batch of rooms to reopen – Hall 8-15 – were closed for
about 15 months! The major works in these rooms were moved to other temporary halls so that visitors
would not miss out on them, the two major ones being the Botticelli paintings Spring and Birth of Venus,
masterpieces that draw many to the Uffizi in the first place.
After significant upgrades, retrofitting and new ceilings, all made possible with a final major grant by
Friends of Florence, the Botticelli rooms reopened last Tuesday, October 18 to the public and we are
super excited to see the changes that have taken place!
Features of the newly restored rooms include new lighting, alarm system, replacement of glass framing
with state-of-the-art glass that is even more protective and technologically advanced. Some of the
paintings not on view during this period were examined and underwent conservation.

DISCOVERIES AND MASSACRES: ARDENGO SOFFICI AND IMPRESSIONISM AT THE
UFFIZI GALLERY

This exhibition, the first ever dedicated to Ardengo Soffici (1879 – 1964), will be the occasion to study
his artistic experience as an artist, writer, art critic and as a polemic that was very active during his time.
He came into contact, and at times with stark, courageous contrast with other contemporary artistic
movements within the Italian and European panorama. The title of the exhibition, Discoveries and
Massacres, alludes to the collection of works by Soffici, published between the first and second decade of
the 20th century, and recognized today along with the cultural initiatives he supported and organized as
important steps in the renewal of art in Italy in the 20th century. Consider that he helped organize the first
Italian exhibition on Impressionism in Italy in Florence in 1910.
The works included in the exhibit – from Segantini to Cezanne, from Renoir to Picasso, from Degas to
Medardo Rosso, from De Chirico to Carrà as well as Soffici’s own work – were selected based on the
predilections and aversions Soffici demonstrated and wrote about. The works will contain critical phrases
directly from Soffici’s writings to ideally help the viewer rediscover one of the most productive and fertile
interpretations on the origins of modern art, through his decisive “discoveries” as well as his drastic
“massacres”.

REAL TIME AND REALITY TIME: CLOCKS FROM PALAZZO PITTI FROM XVII TO XX
CENTURY

The monumental figure of Kronos by Gherardo Silvani will greet you for this special occasion in the
courtyard of Palazzo Pitti, and will show you the path to follow towards the apartments of the Duchessa
d’Aosta, where you can explore the different ways throughout time that the Florentines would tell time:
spanning the Medici, Lorena and Sabauda reigns.Approximately 70 clocks have been selected from over
200 examples, most of which some way are tied to Palazzo Pitti. The criteria for the selection includes the
form, the use of the clock and the environment in which it was kept.

CASA RISPARMIO DI FIRENZE PRESENT THEIR EXTENSIVE ART COLLECTION: IN
COLLEZIONE

The exhibition is the conclusion of a project to organize the immense (over 900 pieces to choose from)
collection of art by the Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze with pieces by Giotto and Filippino Lippi,as well as
several more contemporary or modern pieces which tell the story of Florence.

WINCKELMANN, FLORENCE AND THE ETRUSCANS: THE FATHER OF ARCHEOLOGY IN

In honour of the 250 year anniversary of J.J. Wincklemann's untimely death, the exhibition focuses on the
the German scholars contribution to archaeology in Tuscany. In particular, his contribution to the
knowledge of Etruscan art and his studies were instrumental to the diffusion of the Etruscan myths in the
European culture in the 17-1800’s. This is an excellent opportunity to view the Chimera and the bronze
statue Minerva, both of which have their origins in Arezzo.

GIOVANNI DAL PONTE AT THE ACCADEMIA GALLERY

The monographic exhibition with works from Giovanni dal Ponte (1385-1437), protagonist for the late
Gothic Humanism. A Florentine artist with his own particular language for the late gothic period will
feature a new canvas, the "Madonna and Child Enthroned". The work, which will be on display along
with other paintings of the Tuscan painter from November 22 to the Accademia Gallery in Florence,
comes from the deposits of various Museums from the Tuscan region.

VOLAREARTE IN PISA: PARK EUN SUN SCULPTURES AT PISA AIRPORT

Well into the third edition of this initiative by the Henraux Foundation together with the Tuscany Airports,
you will find a collection of 9 sculptures from Park Eun Sun gracing the Pisa airport.
This renowned Korean artist, a long time resident of Versilia, arrived in Italy to satisfy his desire to work
with Apuane marbles. His artwork, known on an international level, is remarkable for the pure geometric
forms composed of bi-color slabs of marble.

CHIANTI SCULPTURE PARK
Pievasciata, a tiny village in the heart of the Chianti region, has been transformed into a contemporary art
centre. The focal point, the Chianti Sculpture Park, a permanent exhibition of sculptures and installations,
is an integral part of a mystical wooded area.
There are three distinctive characteristics of the Park: integration of art and nature; diversity of cultures,
represented by artists from all over the world; and a variety of materials. Each artist has been invited to
visit the wood in order to choose a location and subsequently submit a site-specific proposal. This
accounts for the harmony of the sculptures with the trees, the sounds, the colours, the light, and other
elements of the wood. In fact, these man-made works do not extend beyond the limits of nature; rather,
they integrate with it and enhance it. Inside the Park an Amphitheatre has also been created to offer
visitors a rich program of concerts and cultural events.
The Chianti Sculpture Park is an indispensable stop not only for art lovers, but also for anyone who
wishes to experience the delights of a walk through nature while admiring fascinating works of art. The
visit is suitable for persons of every age on foot along a walking path of 1 km, but is also accessible with

On the night between 5 and 6 January, groups of men go from poderi to poderi and the villages offering a
begging song. They are the "befanotti", dressed in old clothes and with their faces dirty with soot. The
text of the song describes the character of the befana, who promises gifts for everyone, and ends with
requests for offerings. The gifts collected, usually food, are eaten in a meal shared among the befanotti or
are sold for division of the proceeds. This festival also takes place in the Maremma villages of Alberese,
Braccagni, Poderi di Montemerano and Monterotondo, and in the area of Monte Amiata in the villages of
Saragiolo, Bagnore, Bagnolo and Marroneto.
SINALUNGA: FIERA DELL’EPIFANIA
On January 6, Sinalunga sees the arrival of the Three Wise Men and a town fair for Epiphany (Befana will
certainly be there, too). Also, find similar parades and festivals in: Greve, Impruneta, Incisa (look for the
purple Befana), Matione, San Casciano, Sinalunga, Borgo San Lorenzo and Figline Valdarno.
SAN PIERO A SIEVE: BEFANA ARRIVES BY TRAIN
On January 6, you too can ride the restored old steam train with Befana through the Mugello. The train
departs at 09.00 from Santa Maria Novella (Florence) train station, and arrives at San Piero a Sieve at
13.00, before making the return trip to Florence, arriving at 14.30. A brunch and entertainment for
children make the day extra special (if riding on a steam train was not enough excitement).
Ticket: €21 (adults and children over 4 years old) with family ticket packages available.

FIRE FESTIVALS IN TUSCANY
Falò di Sant’Antonio - The Bonfire of Filattieria is every January 17th in honour of the Abbot
Sant’Antonio. You’ll find this winter spectacle near the 12th century Malaspina Castle in Massa.
Disafeda dei Falò - Pontremoli hosts a celebration in honour of an old medieval rivalry. Come and see the
parishes of San Niccolò and San Geminiano as they battle it out for who can build the biggest and best
bonfire! The bonfires are held on January 17th (in Pontremoli) and January 31st (in San Geminiano).
THE FESTIVAL OF SANT’ANTONIO THE ABBOT
On January 17th, many Tuscan towns celebrate the festival of Sant’Antonio the Abbot with blessings of
grain, bread and animals. There will be parades and fairs in the following locations: Abbadia San
Salvadore, Castiglione d'Orcia, Campiglia d'Orcia, Piancastagnaio, Radicofani, Torrita di Siena, among
others.

SAN GIMIGNANO: THE FEAST OF SAN GIMIGNANO
On January 31, San Gimignano is the place to be for a grand Festival and Fair. The fair is held in Piazza
del Duomo and Piazza della Cistern. There is the offering of the church candle and blessing of the city.
The relic of Saint Geminianus, the bishop saint from Modena, is in the Collegiate Church, dedicated to
Our Lady of the Assumption and situated on the west side of the Piazza del Duomo in San Gimignano,
(one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany), kept in an altar dedicated
to him, and his feast day is January 31.
