From unreadable books to books on
artists designed by an artist…
ITALIAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE STOCKHOLM
Gärdesgatan 14 - SE115 27 Stockholm
Exhibition 05/12/2016 - 08/01/2017
Opening Monday 5 December 5:30 pm
“Everyone knows that children love repeating the same story over and over again, and each
time the child fixes it in their memory to the point where, as an adult, he or she ends up
decorating his or her country house with Snow White and the Seven Dwarves in colored
concrete. This way, the child’s possibility of elastic thinking, the ability to change according
to experience and knowledge, is destroyed. While there’s still time, we need to get the individual
used to thinking, using their imagination, letting their minds wander and being creative.
This is why these books are just visual, tactile, audible, thermal and material stimuli. They
should give the feeling that books are objects made this way and that they contain a great
number of surprises. Culture is made of surprises, things we were not aware of before, and
we need to be ready to listen to them and not reject them out of fear that the castle we’ve
built might crumble. […]”
Bruno Munari, Da cosa nasce cosa
Each book can be an occasion for experimentation on materials, techniques and design:
the book, when broken down and analysed in its elements, is the tool that allows for the
initiation of a series of arguments related to categories and experiences in terms of the
art, photography and design that enriches the thinking of both children and adults. But a
book can also be the ideal tool for an artist to speak about other artists, as in the case of
Fausto Gilberti and his series dedicated to the great masters of contemporary art.
With an intimate exhibition organised at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Corraini
Edizioni invites visitors to explore their books and objects for children on art and design:
the idea is one of showing how, at the foundation of everything, there is the same
concept of design, whether we are speaking about a work hung on a wall, an object or a
book.
