Curated by Lidia Ciotta
Opening December 6, 2016 at 18 | Closes January 10, 2017
Opening hours: Tuesday- Saturday 16.30 - 19.30
In occasion of the XV edizione di FOTOGRAFIA Festival Internazionale di Roma, Sala 1 will host
the first solo exhibition in Italy of the Austrian photographer Heinz Stephan Tesarek with a
selection of 40 images from his on-going project Interim (Zwischenzeit).
The photographic inventory Interim (Zwischenzeit), made by the documentary photographer
Heinz Stephan Tesarek, is a guide across Europe, traversing the worlds of the powerful and
powerless, through an age of emerging discord. Refugees arriving line up next to the celebrations
of private parties, the victims of Islamic terror next to the marches of Fascist organizations, TV
screen-shots from entertainment shows next to hidden messages in the basement pubs of the
jobless.
Interim (Zwischenzeit represents the research that Heinz Stephan Tesarek has steadily
conducted over the past decade, attempting to depict and reconstitute a portrait of a society
whose condition corresponds to the known descriptions of cultures in decline. Where is Europe
headed and in what direction will the Western world follow?
These questions, like the final credits of a documentary film, accompany the images of this
extensive documentation, which consists of about 100 works, collected in a book of photographs
edited by Lammerhuber Edition, and available online at www.zwischenzeit.com.
A tri-lingual digital catalog (English-Italian-German) for the Rome exhibition will be made available
online at www.salauno.com.
Heinz Stephan Tesarek, born in 1976 in Vienna, is a photojournalist and documentary photographer. He
has reported from the wars in disintegrating Yugoslavia, on the so-called “war on terror” in Afghanistan and
the terror of radical Islamists in the Caucasus and in Europe. Between 2001 and 2005 he lived in Moscow
and photographed mainly in Russia and in Eastern Europe. After his return to Vienna he began work on
Zwischenzeit (Interim). Heinz Stephan Tesarek works for magazines and newspapers such as News, Der
Spiegel, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, Forbes Magazine and The New York Times. His work has received
several awards, including a Pictures of the Year International (POYi) Award of Excellence, and the Objektiv
photography prize for the Austrian press photo of the year in 2011 and 2013.
