BE/OP AXEL presentation – 19.Jan.2011 P.Charrue on behalf of the BE-CO-IN-VM team Before CNIC, everybody was using personal desktop on the GPN to develop and test operational software, directly accessing the TN 2006: these desktops were declared TECNET TRUSTED to allow them to access the TN 2007: TRUSTED Terminal Servers were introduced and the personal desktops were un-TRUSTED Late 2009, VMWare virtualisation was deployed in BE/CO and people were migrated from the Terminal Servers to the VMWare Virtual Machines Late 2010, IT offered Hyper-V infrastructure for free for the accelerator sector to host these Virtual Machines 19 January 2011 BE/OP/AXEL - P.Charrue 2 ONLY people who need to develop and test Operational software that need access to the TN If you do not have this need, there are other and much simpler ways to obtain a VM or to develop software HOW to request a VM Users should contact [email protected] And specify WIN7 or SLC5 19 January 2011 BE/OP/AXEL - P.Charrue 3 VM stands for Virtual Machine. Hyper-V is the Microsoft infrastructure used to host VM on powerful physical servers These Hyper-V VM are named CWE-513-VMWxxx: 19 January 2011 2CPUs 2Gb RAM 40GB disk NO access to Internet On the GPN TECNET TRUSTED BE/OP/AXEL - P.Charrue Locally managed Hosted in building 513 (IT) Run WIN7 or SLC5 D: drive can be backed-up by IT if needed Managed by BE/CO/IN 4 JAVA cmmbuild ECLIPSE Exceed Office Jprofiler Firefox Maven Acrobat XMLSpy Benthic Visio Access from home is possible UltraEdit Passerelle SVN Transparent if CLIENT and VM are both WIN Need one hop via CERNTS if client is MAC/LINUX or SSH tunnel to LXPLUS Need specific configuration if VM is LINUX. NX software is recommended More details are available on the BE/CO WIKI https://wikis.cern.ch/display/VM 19 January 2011 BE/OP/AXEL - P.Charrue 5 All users that still need a VM should contact [email protected] to ask for a VM and migrate out of VMWare How-to is described on the CO/VM WIKI pages https://wikis.cern.ch/display/VM In addition, inform [email protected] to remove the old VMWare VM after the migration The VMWare infrastructure will be shutdown in April 2011 19 January 2011 BE/OP/AXEL - P.Charrue 6 Due to current shutdown activities and some issues with IT providing more servers, VPCsupport cannot provide today VM for all users The situation will be much better after midFebruary 2011 19 January 2011 BE/OP/AXEL - P.Charrue 7 Hyper-V are managed by BE/CO/IN Vladimir Glafirov Lev Mozhaev Pierre Charrue Support mailing list is [email protected] All details are available on the BE/CO WIKI VM pages https://wikis.cern.ch/display/VM 19 January 2011 BE/OP/AXEL - P.Charrue 8
