Rinze Benedictus (UMC Utrecht) During this interactive workshop you will be challenged to answer often ignored questions and face inconvenient truths. What is science for? Is the current reward-and-incentive system aligned with the mission of science? You will also learn how the UMC Utrecht tries to increase impact of biomedical research.

Interdisciplinary research: How to step beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries? Max. number of participants:

Geert Jan Geersing, Hans Reitsma (Julius Centrum) Many additional research questions could be answered if the raw, individual data from all existing studies would be available to other researchers. Currently, this is of course far from reality which could be seen as a form of research waste. Data sharing is increasing and promoted by several grant institutions. The Julius Center is involved in several individual patient data (IPD) projects. In this workshop we share our experiences and elaborate on the benefits on having IPD, the methodological challenges, and the various hurdles in obtaining IPD.

Educational and medical research; strange bedfellows no more! Max. number of participants:

Esther de Groot, Renée Filius, Saskia Mol (Julius Centrum) At first sight you might consider research in the learning sciences to be irrelevant for medical researchers. Think again! An educational intervention may help to disseminate your research findings, or it may be part of your research project with the aim to change behaviour of medical professionals. To learn how to study educational interventions in such a way that you can publish about them, you should join this workshop. We will discuss what the learning sciences are, what outcomes make sense in this discipline and why knowing more about this could benefit your medical research. And even without immediate benefits, you probably find these different perspectives on research very refreshing!

Eerst wordt een overzicht geschetst van de achtergronden en methodologie van kwalitatief onderzoek. Daarna ervaren deelnemers door middel van praktische opdrachten met welke belangrijke aspecten ze rekening moet houden bij het uitvoeren van kwalitatief onderzoek.
