Role of fibroblast growth factor
receptors in epithelial
homeostasis and carcinogenesis
Signaling of fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), triggered by binding to their
tyrosine kinase receptors (FGFR1-4), is tightly controlled in paracrine and
context-dependent manner andGDEGLI
is crucial
for the epithelial-stromal interaction

and homeostasis. FGF/FGFR signaling is known to play oncogenic roles in

tumorigenesis: however, through
the triggering of cell differentiation,

receptor activation might lead
to opposite tumour suppressive outcome.
Moreover, ligand binding specificity is regulated by alternative splicing and
the switching from FGFRb epithelial to FGFRc mesenchymal isoforms
appears to be involved in cancer progression. Our recent results on the impact
of FGFR2b/2c switch in dysregulating receptor signaling and on the
functional crosstalk among the receptor and the E5 oncogenic viral protein of
the human papillomavirus 16 (HPV16) will be presented and discussed.
