Biologist, EU scholarship in Urban Ecology at the Technische Universität of Berlin (1989-1990), PhD in Environmental
Sciences at the University of Parma (1992), Italian National Research institute scholarship in Plant Ecology (1993-94), Postdoc in Evolutionary Biology (1994-96). In the years 1996-1998, she taught Applied Ecology at the University of Molise.
Researcher in Ecology since 1999 and Associate Professor in Environmental and Applied Botany since 2012 at Sapienza
University of Rome.
She currently teaches Ecology of Synanthropic and Invasive Plants in the Master’s Degree in Environmental Restoration
and Monitoring as well as Applied Plant Biology in the Master’s Degree in Natural Sciences. Since 2006 she has been a
member of the PhD School in Ecology. Her research is in Plant Ecology and focuses on the relationship between plants and
humans. She works mainly on the ecology of vascular plants in urban and human-disturbed habitats and plant invasions. She
is the author of numerous books and papers in these fields of research and has coordinated several research projects,
including the National database on the non-native flora of Italy, the National Watch-list of the invasive flora, the Survey of
invasive species of national priority and the Atlas and database of the flora of Rome. In her role as an expert on invasive
plants in Italy, she has been a member of a number of national and international scientific commissions and has been
involved in various research groups and projects, including the Expert Group and Advisory Group for alien invasive species
coordinated by the European Environmental Agency, the EU DAISIE Project and the IUCN Invasive Species Specialist Group.
She has been a member of the Italian Commission CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild
Flora and Fauna) at the Ministry for the Environment and of the Circeo National Park Board.
Main ongoing projects:
- Non-native and invasive plants in Italy: identification of species of national priority. Contribution to the National
Biodiversity Strategy - Italian Ministry for the Environment and Italian Botany Society.
- Restoring the Pontine Archipelago ecosystem through the management of rats and other invasive alien species – European
Union LIFE PonDerat Project LIFE14 NAT/IT/000544.
