SJSU Sustainability Board –
A standing committee of the SJSU Academic Senate
CSU Campus as a Living Lab (CLL)Program
▪ Sponsored by the CSU Chancellor’s Office - CSU Chancellor’s
Commitment to Sustainability

▪ Purpose: To fund projects at CSU campuses that use physical
features on their campus to promote sustainability knowledge
and action
▪ Projects chosen through a competitive proposal process
▪ SJSU Sustainability Board submitted a proposal
and won a $12,000 grant for 2013-2014
Our CLL Project
▪ Purposes of our project:
▪ Infuse sustainability more widely throughout our curriculum
▪ Provide faculty members with engaging and useful sustainability
curriculum materials
▪ Offer students an interactive, hands-on learning experience
▪ Develop deeper connections to local community colleges:
▪ De Anza College
▪ Foothill College
▪ Elements:
▪ Develop a campus sustainability map for each campus - see SJSU’s map at
http://www.sjsu.edu/sustainability/sustainablecampus/sustainabilitymap/index.html
▪ Develop 1 -2 session teaching modules, each focused on a sustainability feature
▪ Hold a workshop for faculty members from each campus on the use of the modules in
teaching

▪ Each module connects with a GE SLO & provides an assessment
tool the instructor can use to collect data on the SLO
▪ Designed as one or two-session, stand-alone packages – a full
lecture with activities, assignments and materials

Learn how to use the modules to incorporate sustainability into their courses
Connect with colleagues
Discuss the role of sustainability in our curriculum
Learn how to make the modules most useful to YOU

Participating faculty members will incorporate at least on module in a greensheet
Provide greensheet showing module use to us by June 15
Use at least one module in one of their classes in 2014-2015
Provide feedback to help improve the modules and your experience using them
