Overview
• In 1998, an effort was undertaken to develop a community-wide
project to study ice initiation processes
• Projects such as IMPROV, CRYSTAL/FACE, and INTACC studied
ice nucleation and ice formation processes
• Laboratory studies have been conducted at CSU, in Germany, and on
Storm Peak, Colorado
• In September 2003, a proposal to develop an NCAR-wide initiative to
study ice nucleation processes was funded
• Discussions with Al Cooper (NSF) were held to strategize as to how
this initiative could be broadened to include the university community
Goals of this Meeting
• Reach a consensus on two or three experiments that can make
meaningful progress on the ice initiation problem.
• Develop the agenda for a late May/June Workshop
• Compile a list of prospective workshop attendees
• Develop a tentative outline for an NSF Scientific Overview Document
(SOD)
