Sleep Stages

5 Stages of sleep.
 NREM
 REM
Stage 1

10 minutes
 Body relaxes.
 Brain waves slow down.
 Dreamlets occur.
Stage 2 & 3

Stage 2: 10 – 15 min. Brain waves

Stage 3: 10 – 20 min. Low voltage waves
every few seconds.
Stage 4 – DEEP SLEEP

Large regular Delta waves.
 State of oblivion.
 Incubus attacks
 Sleep talking
 Sleep walking
 Bed Wetting with no trace in memory.
REM Sleep

Rapid Eye Movement
 Brain waves resemble the awake state.
 Pulse Rate and Breathing Irregular.
 Vivid dreaming takes place.
 Sleeper is “Paralyzed”
Night Cycle

Cycle through stages every 90 minutes.
 Each cycle stage 4 decreases.
 Each cycle REM stage increases.
Night Terrors
Autonomic reaction:
 elevated heart rate
 rapid breathing
 perspiration
Physical reaction:
 Sleepers will bolt upright
 eyes wide open
 often scream
Sleep Apnea

Pauses in breathing while asleep (pause can
be up 5 seconds to several minutes)
 Person is unaware of disturbed sleep

Sleep disorder marked by the inability to
fall asleep or to reach deep sleep.
