Collaborative Models of
Education ADN-BSN
Top Ten Countdown of Breakthroughs and Barriers
Presented by: Karen Jensen

Ventura College, Santa Barbara City College
The Ah Ha Moments …
Breakthroughs!

•
•
Schools in Collaborative have given ample access to recruit from
current student population
Students at the end of the ADN program see this as the end of
the rainbow. We need to recruit and admit when student is
admitted to ADN program
Schools who have a philosophy that the “ADN is the first step in
your nursing career” have a higher rate of students enrolled in the
collaborative
Need to be aware of student’s financial aid situations. For
example: those who have student loans have to be in at least 6
units to get student loans deferred we are in quarter system and
summer classes 5 units

… Barriers

Prerequisites Chemistry of Life, Critical Thinking Requirements
discourage students
Obtaining financial aid at two schools- Community College and CSU
Channel Islands simultaneous is a challenge
Not many financial or other benefits to a BSN in the county, since
hospitals in area not paying a differential salary and limited
preferential hiring for BSN grads
Community College Nursing faculty advising students they need to
take boards and work for a year so they do not loose skills before
starting a BSN program
Even though we offered a “free trial course” during the spring
students felt that they were too overwhelmed to partake

Surprising Outcome

Economy and lack of hiring grads in area promoted students
continuing their education .
Initial survey of 118 students 94% interest but when applications
began started very slow but up to 24 enrolled students – goal was
22 per cohort
Breakdown: Moorpark College 16; Ventura College 5; Santa Barbara
City College 3
Much interest from students outside Santa Barbara and Ventura
County and we need to open the collaborative to Northern LA
County schools i.e. Pierce, College of Canyons, Valley
Do not need to offer “complementary first course” to get students
interested in the program they did not take this opportunity
