COOPERATION WITH NBS Ramesh Kolli Additional Director General Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation 1 Formal cooperation • The CSO, India and NBS, China have no formal cooperation agreements • NBS activities are much more broader as compared to the activities of CSO • NBS activities cut across several offices in India • CSO is largely a coordinating body in a decentralised statistical system, with the responsibility to compile national accounts, price indices and production index and establishing standards • Delegations from NBS regularly visit their counterpart offices in India • Since the cooperation activities are not centralised, there is no central database on the exchange of visits and topics of discussions 2 NBS Visits to CSO • • • Few delegations in the past 10 years At least one on national accounts In November, 2009 a delegation from NBS visited CSO – – – – – – Mr. Xie Hongguang, Deputy Commissioner, NBS Mr. Li Xiaochao, Director-General, Department of Comprehensive Statistics, NBS Mr. Zhu Yuli, Director-General, Logistic and Service Center of NBS Mr. Zeng Yuping, Director-General, China Information News, NBS Mr. Zhang Songqing, Director-General, Survey Office of the National Bureau of Statistics in Hunan Mrs. Song Shaoying, Deputy Director, Division of Bilateral Relations, Department of International Cooperation, NBS 3 Contd… • The present delegation focused its discussions on – Current economic performance – Global financial crisis – Data support to measure these issues • The delegation was quite interested in knowing the way Indian national accounts are compiled 4 Contd… • NBS officials exchange mails with the CSO on national accounts concepts and compilation procedures • During the ICP 2005 discussions and meetings, the CSO and NBS officials regularly exchanged views • A formal cooperation agreement between the two organisations could further the present informal exchange of visits • This view was also expressed from both sides in the recent visit of NBS delegation to the CSO 5 Thanks 6
