Objectives
• Define the problem
• State the Facts
• Briefly propose a solution
Problem
• Certain types of food have the capability to
kill people if they are consumed. Among
dangerous foods, peanuts, milk, and eggs
are the most common (9 million Americans
are allergic to these foods).1

Just the Fax Facts
• Food allergies are a harsh reality that
govern the lives of 11 million Americans.2
• 100 food-related anaphylactic deaths are
recognized each year in the US.3

osition_statements/ps34.asp
Just the Fax Facts
• Experts estimate that food allergy occurs
in 8 percent of children 6 years of age or
under.4
• Most people with food allergies are allergic
to fewer than 4 foods.5

Mild Ponderance
• With a problem that has an impact on so
many lives with such dire consequences,
what is being done to keep these
vulnerable people safe?

Proposal
• These technological advances are more
for detecting when a food allergy has been
triggered (reactive).
• These resources are more for avoidance
of dangerous foods (preventive).
• Proposal to introduce the technology into
the preventive stage utilizing the resources
available (and a little slick ingenuity).
Barcodes
• Barcodes are a very simple method for tracking
a lot of information on a lot of products.
• Most products have a
barcode.
• Barcodes are governed by one central agency:
(UCC) – Uniform Code Council8

Ingredients for Success
• A simple system with a plethora of
information on the products causing the
food allergy deaths and hospitalizations.
• A simple technology to read these codes.
• A uniform standard that all barcodes must
abide by.
• Grocery stores already have this system in
place.

Conclusion
• Food allergies is a serious problem that
causes unnecessary deaths and a
technological solution is needed at the
preventive level to greatly reduce the
numbers of victims.
• The system proposed would do just this as
it would increase the effectiveness of the
awareness and preventive stages.
