Allergy Medications Side Effects

Corticosteroids

– used to prevent and treat inflammation 

Side effects:

cataracts, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, delayed growth in children 

Nasal sprays (steroid)

 nasal irritation, nosebleeds unpleasant smell or taste, 

Antihistamines

– block histamines, an inflammatory chemical produced by your immune system.

e.g. Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, Benadryl 

Side effects:

dry mouth, drowsiness, slow reaction time, according to Mayo Clinic “ these older sedating meds should not be given to children

Main ingredient: diphenhydramine Also marketed as Nytol, Sominex, Unisom Sleepgels as examples    Common side effects: vomiting, nausea sedation, drowsiness, dizziness, disturbed coordination, increased chest congestion, dry mouth, nose, and throat, may increase tooth decay, gum disease, and fungal infections; headache, muscle weakness, excitability, nervousness, loss of appetite, constipation, Serious side effects: urination low blood pressure, palpitations, increased heart rate, confusion, nervousness, tremors, irritability, blurred vision, double vision, painful and difficult

Long Term Side Effects on the Brain:

cognitive impairment, delirium, slowed thinking, Alzheimer’s

Allergy Medications Side Effects

 Antihistamine nasal sprays – 

Side effects:

bitter taste, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, runny nose, sore throat, sneezing AND DEPENDENCE.

 Decongestants – For quick, temporary relief of sinus congestion (**avoid if pregnant, older or have high blood pressure) e.g. Claritin–D, Sudafed 

Side effects:

irritability, fast or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, insomnia, headaches, anxiety, tremors, increased blood pressure. “Potentially dangerous if on certain other medications, or if you have high blood pressure, heart disease or certain other health problems.” (Mayo Clinic)
