Introduction
 Making sense of unfamiliar visualization
 Evaluation has been done to find the sensemaking
activities of novice people on encountering unfamiliar visualization
 Researchers used ground theory method on the data
 NOVIS model has been created as a result
3
Background
 Few studies on interaction between novice users and visualization
 Graph comprehension
•
•
•
•
Graph formats
Visual characteristics
Knowledge about graphs
Knowledge about contents
 Existing models
• Notional model of analysts sensemaking loop
• Data/frame theory of sensemaking
4
Methods
 Visualizations
• Parallel- coordinate plot
5
Methods
 Visualizations
• Chord Diagram
6
Methods
 Visualizations
• Treemap
7
Methods
 Participants
• 13 participants
• Participants were selected from a university and had basic computer skills
• All of the participants were native English speakers
• One hour of participation
8
Procedure
 Two practice sessions were organized to familiarize the participants
with the think aloud method
 Visualizations from 13 out of 39 sessions were showed to participants
 Data prescreening was performed
 Five sessions were removed based on the result
 Three observation sessions and one semi structured interview was
conducted
 Qualitative inquiry approach for data triangulation
 Grounded theory applied to data

Why, What and How framework
 What? – One multidimensional dataset, One network dataset and one tree
dataset.
 Why? –
• Actions
Analyze
o Consume (Discover)
o Produce(Record, Derive)
Query
o Compare
• Targets
Attributes
o Correlation
12
Why, What and How framework
 How?• Manipulate
o Navigate
• Reduce
o Filter
• Encoding- Dynamics of activities
13
Validation analysis
 Domain validation- Involving semistructured interview for domain
situation assessment
 Abstraction validation-Observing and documenting participants
quotes
 Idiom validation-Measuring participant’s performance on unfamiliar
visualization
 Algorithm validation-Clear demonstration of sensemaking activities in
the NOVIS model compared to other existing models
14
Challenges and Limitations
 Challenges
 Incorrect and failed frames
 Problem in exploring the visualization
 Limitations
• Missing thought processes due to think aloud method
• Limited number of types of information visualization used
• Unrealistic experimental setting
15
Future Research Directions
 Application of other presentation strategies to construct a correct
frame
 Effective visualization sensemaking
 Expansion of sensemaking activities
 Expert’s understanding of unfamiliar visualization
16
Conclusions
 NOVIS model is believed to be the one of earliest qualitative studies
 Cognitive activities of novice users were effective for further studies
in that area
 NOVIS model research is effective for visualization literacy test items
and novice user’s visualization literacy
 Focus was given on the user’s sensemaking activities rather than
information visualization techniques
