Introduction

• The channel quality can differ in each of the
“zones” of the allocation
– A zone can be a tile in uplink
– A zone can be several contiguous subcarriers in
downlink
• We can enhance the performance of the link if
the constellations sizes and/or the coding
assigned to each “zone” is allowed to differ

• As a simple example, assume that there are six
6x6 zones assigned in a link
• By feedbacking the CQI (channel quality
indicator) based on these zones, the BS can
assign different constellation sizes

• Let us assume that the BS will assign QPSK
rate 3/4 to all the 6 zones vs. assigning QPSK
rate ½ to the worst 3 an 16QAM rate ½ to the
best 3

the link quality in “zones”
• The BS assigns constellations and/or coding
based on this quality
