•Names must be uniform so scientists can
describe an organism regardless of their
native languages
•Organisms are classified according to the
following order
–Kingdom
–Phylum
–Class
–Order
–Family
–Genus
–Species
Binomial Nomenclature
• Naming of organisms is by the rules of Binomial
Nomenclature
– The name is typically in latin
– The name must be either italicized, or underlined
– Organisms are labeled according to a two name
system
– The First name is the Genus of the organism
– Genus Must always be capitalized.
– It may be abbreviated with a capital letter
– The second name is the species name
– it must also either be italicized, or underlined
