TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS
FROM PLAY HARD WORK
HARD
WORKSHOP BY MCGILL OFFICE FOR STUDENTS
WITH DISABILITIES
SCHEDULING TIPS
1.
2:1 ratio - study for 2 hours per 1 hour in class
2.
3:1 ratio - for seminar/labs, study 3 hours per 1 hour in
class
3.
Spaced practice - study a subject several times over the
week for less time
4.
No marathon studying - unless engaged in highly
motivating activity (painting, writing, etc.)
5.
Trading time - trade study session with unexpected event
20/10 METHOD



study for 20 minutes at a time, then take a 10 minute break
at your first break, ask yourself these two questions: Did I
understand everything that I just read? Could I explain this
information to someone else?
if you answer yes, you may want to increase your study time
to 25, 30 or 35 minutes
20/10 METHOD



if you answer no to one or both questions, evaluate your
study environment
should the information be difficult or boring, or if you are
just not feeling able to focus, reduce the amount of study
time to 15 or 10 minutes
make sure to always take your 10 minute break! This is
very important for focus and motivation!
REWARDS
In 3 minutes, make a list of all of your favourite activities.
When planning your weekly schedule, think about where you
could fit in these activities. Can you do them in between 2
hour study sessions? During your 10 minute study breaks?
