1
Historical background
The story of Bejaia and learning goes back to the
second half of the 11th Century; It was one of the biggest
centres of high studies in the Maghreb. Its notoriety drew
great figures of literature, sociology and science who
stayed and worked there. Among them IBN KHALDUN,
Leonardo FIBONACCI, Raymond LULLE and others who
had been hosted by the city of “small candles”.
Destructed under the spanish(16th century) and french
(19th century) occupations, the university of Bejaia
reopened again in 1983.
