Grades
• Not weighted – a point is a point!
• Homework – Haven’t had a lot lately, but when
we do have it, it’s a completion grade
• Tests and Quizzes – one or the other about once
a week; many will be informal spoken
assessments
– Quizzes = 5-45 points
– Tests = 50 – 100 points
• Participation Grades
– we will be using games to learn spoken Latin, which
require participation. Participation points are awarded
on a daily basis and totaled into one weekly grade.
Edith Hamilton Mythology Book
Required Text! We’ll be using it
for tests and projects.
The version does not make a whole lot of difference. Feel
free to save some money and get a used copy online!
Latin Club
• $8 by September 30; $10 after Oct 1; $20 after
Jan 1
– Student led organization
– Activities depend on the interests of the students
• Range from meeting to see latest Classically themed movie
to dinner outings to Lazer Tag.
– Some activities will require membership to
participate, some will not
• E.g. student must be a member of Latin Club to participate in
Conventions.
– Best way to not have to worry about it:
• Join!!!
Events for the year
National Latin Exam
Some day in the week of March 11th.
• Jenks’ Latin curriculum based on NLE
• Everyone should take the NLE
– Students with an A or a B are expected to take NLE
• $4
• Why take the NLE?
– Cheap standardized test practice with no pressure
– Scholarship money and prizes for high scores
– Why not? They’ve been studying for it all year!
ACTFL Latin Interpretive Reading
Assessment (ALIRA)
• Computer-adaptive assessment of Latin students’
ability to read for comprehension Latin-language texts
• May or late April (depending on state testing)
• Format:
– One or two multiple-choice questions accompany each
text and gather evidence of understanding of main ideas,
supporting details, point-of-view, inferences, or text
purpose
– 50 minutes, taken during Latin class in school computer lab
• $10

• Cost: $75-$100
– Will need chaperones! (1 chaperone per 10 students)
– Hoping to have fundraisers to help offset some of the costs
for chaperones and for students
National Latin Convention
• Like state, but bigger, longer, and on a college campus
• Students are not permitted to leave the college campus
• July 28-August 2, 2014
• Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia
– Yes, parents can come too
• Competitions in

• Fun way to gear back up before school starts
• $600-$800, depending on travel costs
