Narrowing and Expanding:
Boolean Operators
AND & NOT:
Narrows a
search,
resulting in
fewer hits
Operator Example
Search
AND
Network and
Security
items containing
"Network" and
"Security"
OR
Network or
Security
items containing
either "Network" or
"Security" or both
NOT
Network not
Security
items containing
"Network " but not
"Security"
OR:
Expands a
search,
resulting in
more hits
The search will
find...

Truncation
• Use the truncation symbol * to find articles containing
several words with the same root
Example: Type educat* to find "educator“, "educators“,
"educated“, "educating“, "education“, and "educational”
Wildcard Character
• The “?” symbol is used as a substitute for a
missing character in a search term, usually when
you are unsure of a spelling or when you want to
find two forms of one word.
Example: If you enter WOM?N to a search box, it
will locate records containing either "woman" or
"women".
Phrase Searching
• You can keep words together as a phrase by
enclosing them in quotes “”.
Example: “Information Literacy Standards”,
“Organizational Behaviour” or “Game
Theory”
Nesting
Nesting enables you to combine several search statements
into one search. Use parentheses to clarify the relationship
between the combined search terms.
Example:Globalization and (management or administration)
combines “Globalization” with either “management” or
“administration”
Hints for Searching
• If your search terms do not return enough hits,
try using Boolean operators with other terms
• Use complete and specific words for your
search
• Always check your spelling
• Use synonyms in your search to find articles on
the same subject using different terminology
