• Results for Component 2 – Coastal
• Main activities undertaken during 2012
• Activities planned for 2013.
Results for Component 2 – coastal
• Result: P-ACP governments, private sector and
communities are equipped to monitor coastal
fisheries to provide scientific advice in support of
sustainable management of these resources.
• P-ACP governments, private sector and
communities will be provided with the technical
methods and training to monitor coastal fisheries,
scientific advice to inform management decisions,
and development of in-country capacity to
evaluate their effectiveness
2012 activities – Result 2.1: Conduct stakeholder
consultations for priority needs
• Priority setting has mainly been done through
in-country discussions and through email
exchanges to refine priorities in 2012.
• Input from the 2012 project Steering Committee
and other regional meeting.
• Little through JCS as few missions in 2012, but
still a good mechanism.

to implement field monitoring protocols
• In-country UVC training for
invertebrates in Palau (11),
Samoa (7), Fiji (13) and

• Capacity development in
creel survey methodologies

advice
• Invert management advice
provided to Marshalls, Kiribati and
Fiji.

• Advice to Samoa and Kiribati on
national coastal fisheries
development and management
policies.

• In collaboration with the LMMA Network, developed,
printed and distributed 16 information sheets for
community-based management, and accompanying
guide booklet in 2011.
• Additional 8 info sheets and 1 brochure on community
managed no-take areas.
• Poster on ciguatera for Tuvalu.
• Trochus poster on life cycle and management.
Activities proposed for 2013: Result 2.1
• Winding down in this area with Timor Leste the
last country to set priorities
• Input from this Steering Committee meeting and
the HOF meeting to finalise our work plan
• Continue to consult at the country level through
in-country activities, mainly for implementation
• Participation in joint JCS missions to discuss and
prioritise national monitoring needs

• Finalise, print and distribute: invertebrate
survey manual, market and creel survey
manual and finfish UVC survey manual.
• Training in finfish UVC survey
methodologies and biological sampling in
Fiji
• Technical assistances for invertebrate
surveys in Nauru, Pohnpei FSM and one
other country and train up at least 5 local
counterparts in survey methods in each
country
Activities proposed for 2013: Result 2.2
• Attachment training for data analysis
for 2 staff from Cook Islands and
Palau and 4 staff (2 fisheries, 2 NGO)
from Fiji
• Attachment training for otolith
preparation and reading in
collaboration with IRD for Fiji, Tonga,
Samoa, Palau and PNG
Activities proposed for 2013: Result 2.3
• Finalise database for market and creel surveys
and distribute
• Deploy micro servers in at least 4 more countries
• Undertake country visits to develop country
specific databases
• At least one attachment training to improve
database skills
• Continue to update and refine the regional
database for species and habitats.
Activities proposed for 2013: Result 2.4
• Management advice and/or draft plans for
invertebrate fisheries provided to Palau, Cook
Islands and Fiji
• Provide management advice to at least 2
countries for non-sea cucumber fisheries.
• Work with the MSG to explore a sub-regional
approach to management of sea cucumbers
• Produce 7 additional information sheets and 3
posters for community-based management.
• Produce status of coastal fisheries report.
