The Berry-Go-Round

Trevor Toll, Julie Carrell
Overview
Dimensions 0.5m x0.5mx0.5m
Set up: 30 seconds
Duration :15 seconds
Object: lead ball and ball bearing
Begin coaster by hand
The rollercoaster starts off inside a
spiral with the ball bearing. At the
end of the spiral the ball bearing hits
the lead ball causing it to fall into a
PVC pipe leading to a loop. The
lead ball goes up a curved incline
and falls into a funnel. It then
gradually rolls through a PVC pipe
ending in a landing pad.
Equations

PE = KE + Eloss
Energy: mgh=1/2mv^2+Eloss
Ex: On roller coaster when ball bearing is released

Conservation of Momentum


 P1
+ P2 = P1’ + P2’
 Ex: On roller coaster when ball bearing hits lead ball

Fun facts



Length of time on project: 7 hours
Total work and planning: 9 hours
Adversity:
 Planned
roller coaster differed greatly from actual
roller coaster
 Friction was a momentum killer (haha) literally and
figuratively
