Use of the Present Tense

The present tense of a verb is used for the
following:
 Facts of science, mathematics, geography, etc.
 Universally true statements or customary
happenings not limited to a particular time
 Definitions
 Information about the content of a literary work
despite its having been written in the past or its
being written in the past tense

However, historical information about the author or the work
itself should be expressed in the passed tense.
