Ordinal Numbers
Ordinal numbers show in what order things occur. In Spanish,
generally only the first ten ordinal numbers are used. They are
generally between the definite article and the noun. Like all other
adjectives, they must agree in gender and number with the noun.

When primero and tercero precede a masculine, singular noun,
they are shortened to primer and tercer.
Pedro es el primer corredor en terminar.
Antonio es el tercer corredor en terminar.
Like in English, the Spanish can be abbreviated.
