Transcript You Want Me to Do What?

HEARD THIS BEFORE?
 “I read the chapter three times and it still doesn’t
make sense.”
 “I know I’m supposed to read before class, but it
makes so much more sense if I read after lecture.”
 “There is so much information in the book. How do I
know what’s important?”
 “Just show me. I can’t make sense of the instructions
in the book.”
 “I paid $230 for this book and never even used it.”

When Figures
are Key to
Understanding
Steps to Deciphering a Figure
Through Annotation

AS YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE...

STEP BY STEP
Questions to ask to decipher a figure:
1.
What are the graphic conventions for the book?
2.
What do you already know? What’s familiar?
3.
What is not already labeled? Can you place additional labels
(annotate) to enrich context?
4.
What type of information is shown? Is it a process? A timeline? A list?
5.
How does the caption relate to the figure?
6.
Where in the text is there a reference to the figure? Are the same
terms used? Are there additional terms?
Got it? Now write a narration of what you think are the important
elements for the figure.
GRAPHIC CONVENTIONS
 The graphic artist is
on your side.
 The text book is
consistent in its use
of graphic elements.
 Keep a notecard with
a list of the color
used for each
concept/structure.
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

 Put a check mark by
the elements that
you already know.

 (Doesn’t that make
you feel more
confident?)



 Note what you still
need to find out.

Find the payment necessary to amortize a loan of
$58,000 in 9 years with an interest rate of 6.5%
compounded semiannually.
To solve a word problem:
1. Identify unknown words using context clues or looking them up
2. Identify Key Words to choose which formula to use
3. Identify which numbers mean what
4. Identify number of compounds if applicable
5. Plug into the formula and solve
6. Make sure your answer makes sense!
