Types of Bonds
Ionic Bonds
• An electrical attraction between two oppositely charged
atoms or groups of atoms.
• Normally, atoms are neutral and have no charge. However,
in order to gain stability they TRANSFER e- to either lose
its outermost electrons (+ cation) or they will gain
electrons (- anion). Once this has happened the resulting
charged atoms will attract each other.
Covalent Bonds
• Occurs between nonmetal atoms, SHARE
electrons
Polar
Nonpolar
Metallic Bonds
• Holds metals together by sharing the
electrons (sea of electrons)
• VERY STRONG
•
