Just What Is Chemical Bonding!?!??!

Chemical Bonding
• Chemical bonding is the order of combining atoms to form different elements.
• There are three types of chemical bonds. Ionic, covalent, and metallic.
Valence Electrons in Atom
• If the element is in Groups 1-2 it has the same number of valence electrons as its group number.
• Elements in Groups 3-12 vary on how many valence electrons they have • Elements in Groups 13 18 have their group number minus 10.
Ionic Bond
• Ionic Bond- is the force of attraction between the opposite charge of an ion. • Atoms that loose the electrons become a positively charged ion, atoms that gain electrons is negative charged
Properties
• High Melting Point and Boiling Point.
• Brittle solids at room temperature.
• Seashell • Table Salt • Plaster of Paris
Examples
Crystal Lattice
• A 3 dimensional geometric arrangement of the atoms or molecules or ions composing a crystal.
• The ions that make up an ionic compound are bonded in a crystal lattice.
• The ions in the crystal lattice are ranged as alternating positive and negative ions, forming a crystal lattice .
Covalent Bonds
• The force of attraction between the nuclei of atoms and the electrons shared by the atoms.
• Molecule-A neutral group of atoms held together by covalent bonds.
• A molecule is the simplest particle into which a covalently bonded compound can be divided and still be the same particle.
Properties
• Low melting point and boiling point.
• Brittle at solid state.
• Water.
• Granola Bar.
Examples
Metallic Bonds
• The force of attraction between a positively charged metal ion and the electrons in a metal.
• Examples: Staples, Nails, and a metal comb.
• Malleability.
• Ductility.
• Electrical Conductors.
Properties
Atoms Likely to Form Bonds
• If an atom is in Groups 1 2 and another one in Groups 13-18 it will probably form an ionic bond.
• If the atoms are in Groups 3-12 it will probably form a metallic bond.
• If the atoms are in Groups 13-18 it will probably form a covalent bond.
Niels Bohr
Bohr was born on October 7, 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was a Danish physicist and received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922. He died on November 18, 1962.
Niels Bohr
Bohr invented the Bohr Model of an atom that is used to show where the levels of electrons are. His model is not necessarily correct, but it is used to show how many electrons are on each level.
Gilbert Newton Lewis
Lewis was born on October 23, 1875 in Massachusetts. He was an American physist who was nominated over 30 times, but never won the Nobel Prize. He died on March 23, 1946.
Gilbert Newton Lewis
Lewis founded covalent bonds. He was most known for his contributions to the electron-pair model of covalent bonds.
