Fuel Consumption Investigation
Petrol Stations display prices using
digital numbers. These are made
up of small line segments.
What is the largest number you can make with
10 segments?
What is the largest number you can make with
16 segments?
Learning Objective: To use appropriate units of measure
to investigate travel costs
Sell-out Concert in London!
Amazingly, you have managed to get
tickets but you now have very little
money left to get there.
There is no public transport from Ipswich
or Woodbridge to take you all the way
there.
Only option – you’ve hired a car! The
only cars available are all the same price
but you have to pay for the fuel that you
use.
We are going to investigate which car is going to
be the cheapest to re-fuel after the trip.
What information are we going to need so we
can make an informed choice of car to hire?
The Hire company has only provided basic
information for 3 different cars:
1) How much fuel they use in urban areas
2) How much fuel they use on motorways
Information is in Miles per Gallon (mpg)
Distance to Concert
Woodbridge to London
Diesel 110p per litre
Petrol 104p per litre
Built up area (Urban)
15 miles
Motorway (A14 & M25) 65 miles
To convert fuel consumption from gallons to litres
1 Gallon ≈ 4.5 litres
40 mpg is equivalent to 40 miles/litre
4.5
= 8.89 miles per litre (to 2 d.p.)
