A changing of the guard
換崗
Narrator: Sheila and Justin are meeting
with Carol, the outgoing chairperson,
and Wayne, the outgoing secretary.
Wayne
開會。
Carol: So, how did you guys get
roped into this?
Sheila: Some of us volunteered.
Others were talked into it.
Wayne:I’ll say one thing;you guys are in for a real
treat.
Justin: You make it sound like being a member of the
activities committee is more work than we bargained
for
Carol: No, it’s not really that bad. It’s
hard work and nobody appreciates what
you do, but it can be fun and rewarding.
So, who will succeed me as the next
chairperson?
Justin: We’ve been talking amongst
ourselves and we believe that Sheila is the
best person for the job.
Sheila
Sheila: I do.
是的。
Carol: All in favor? (Everyone raises
their hand.)Opposed? Congratulations,
Sheila. You’re the new chairperson of
Home a Ware’s activities committee.
Home
Sheila: Thank you. Just remember,
anyone demanding a recount only has
seven days to do so. (laughter)
Justin: So, shall we get down to brass
tacks?
Some words to the wise
Narrator: The meeting between the old and
new committees is well underway. The new
committee is seeking guidance from the old
committee.
Sheila: So what’s the most important piece
of advice you can give us.
Wayne:(speaking slowly) Stick. To. Tour.
Budget.
Carol: He’s right. You’re going to
have some great ideas, but fitting
them all into the budget will be
impossible. Believe us. We tried.
Justin: What about the events
themselves? Any suggestions?
Wayne:Keep them fun, and keep
them fresh.
Justin: So, you’re suggesting a whole new
slate of activities?
Wayne:I wouldn’t go that far. There are
some old standards that everyone has come
to expect.
Carol: Like the monthly birthday parties.
Wayne:That’s right. But try and give them
a new twist. For example, last year we
asked employees to provide some kind of
entertainment --a funny song, a comedy
routine-- so it wasn’t just a bunch of people
standing around eating cake.
Sheila: That’ll be hard to top.
Carol: But don’t go too far.
Remember ’98?
Justin: What happened in ’98?
Sheila: You weren’t with us then.
Let’s just say the dirty joke
contest at the year-end party
didn’t go over too well the top
brass.
Brainstorming
Narrator: Members of the new committee
are meeting by themselves for first time.
Sheila has asked them to share their activity
ideas with the group.
Sheila: Okay everyone; let’s come up with
some ideas for activities.
Marcus: How about karaoke?
Justin: Marcus. What do most of us do
just about every weekend?
Marcus,
Marcus: We go to karaoke... Gotcha.
Keep it fresh, right?
Sheila: Right. Keep working on it, Marcus.
Anyone else?
Erin: What about a dinner-and-Movie night?
We could order in some food, set up the big
screen in the cafeteria, make some popcorn,
and watch a movie.
Sheila: I like it. How about you, Justin?
Justin你呢?
Justin: Since everyone is a little tired of
the formal year-end banquet, how about
a weekend at a local beach resort or a
mountain getaway?
Sheila: That sounds like fun. Now, what
about doing something for the community?
Erin: Why don’t we adopt a park? It could
be our company’s job to clean it up once a
month for a year.
Sheila: Time-consuming, but cost-effective.
Add it to the list. Okay. Anyone else
have…
Marcus: I got it! (Speaking confidently) We
should have a dinner-and-a-Movie night.
Sheila: Oh, Marcus. Try and keep up!
