Services (The HUB)

Recognizing a Need
• Student academic services – priority
defined by CSS Chairs/Directors
• Task force prepared a faculty-driven
proposal
• Holistic student-centered approach that
integrates UG advising with a variety of
value-added educational opportunities
• Goal of the academic services office is to
support our students from entry through
graduation, and beyond
• This office will serve our College’s various
academic units, with:
 An average of 1,700 UG majors (with PrePSY) per year, and
 Approximately 620 UG students graduated
per year
The Vision
• Linking student-centered advising with
staff having the expertise to advance
various engaged student learning
opportunities, such as:
 internships
 service learning
 research
 global learning, etc.
• Growing need to incorporate value-added
educational opportunities for students
• Such opportunities are important for
student advancement, increasing
retention rates, improving graduation
rates, and facilitating success beyond
graduation
Lets consider internships
• The 2014 Gallup-Purdue Index Report “Great
Jobs, Great Lives”
“If employed graduates felt their college prepared
them well for life outside of it, the odds that they are
engaged at work rise nearly three times”
• Internships were one of the main college
experiences that contributed to workplace
engagement
• The Stone et al. (2012) Rutgers U. study
“Chasing the American Dream…..”
concluded that:
“Those who did an internship while in
college felt more prepared to enter the
workforce”
“Students who completed an internship while in
college earned nearly 15% more on average than
those who did not undertake an internship”
