Budget Basics
 Direct Costs
 Facilities and Administrative (F&A) Costs
 Indirect Costs
 Total Costs
 Modified Total Direct Costs (MTDC)
 Total Direct Costs (TDC)
Basic Expenditure Considerations
 Allowable
 Cost item meets sponsor requirements
 Allocable
 Particular cost item can be specifically identified with the
project or can be clearly allocated to the project
 Reasonable
 Would a prudent person have incurred the expense
under the circumstances?
 Is the item necessary for the project?
Two Distinct Budget Formats
 Non-Modular Format
 Used for research grant applications requesting more than
$250,000 direct costs per year
 Modular Format
 Used for research grant applications requesting less than
$250,000 direct costs per year
Budget Justification
 Specific to the sponsor
 Non-Modular and Modular Requirements are different
 Provide the justification for each individual in the same order
as listed on the budget page (PI first, remaining in role
importance)
 Present the categories in the same order as on the budget
page
 Give additional information if it isn’t obvious in the budget
