Structural Analysis of Stresses Transferred to a
Basketball Backboard from the Rim by Human Loads
RPI Master's Project First Progress Report
Ryan Ansaldo - 6/11/2012
Problem Description:
•
•
The purpose of this project is to do a structural analysis
of a backboard and compare the stresses results of 3
common backboard materials
The load chosen will be applied at the furthest distance
on the rim from the backboard to simulate the highest
bending moment.
Geometry selection
•
The geometry selected were regulation sizes for the
basketball rim and backboard:
Backboard:
-½ in thick by 42 inches high by 72 inches wide.
Basketball rim:
-18 in diameter, 5/8 in diameter rod (nearest inside point is 6 inches away
from backboard)
Mounting plate:
-4 bolt pattern (5” x 5”)
Geometry selection (cont.)

Materials:
•
The three backboard materials of interests are tempered glass,
acrylic, and steel.
