What is Functionally Graded Material?
• Functionally Graded Material
(FGM) is typically composed
of a ceramic and a metal.
• The composition varies
gradually from the metal to
the ceramic, through the
volume of the material.
• First proposed for use in high
temperature applications.

Problem Description
• Functionally graded material has potential use in
areas such as turbine engine airfoils.
• Behavior of functionally graded materials are still
being explored.
• Understanding vibratory modes are important to
structures that are exposed to vibration
excitation sources.
• Modes and modal analysis methods of
functionally graded material plates will be
examined in this project.
3
Methodology/Approach
• Determine the exact solution 1st natural frequency and
mode shape for a simply supported FGM plate and a
simply supported ordinary plate.
• Determine the 1st natural frequency and mode shape
for a simply supported ordinary plate using finite
element analysis.
• Determine the 1st natural frequency and mode shape
for a simply supported FGM plate, with a smooth
continuous material grade, using finite element
analysis.
• Determine the 1st natural frequency and mode shape
for a simply supported FGM plate, with a stepwise
material grade, using finite element analysis.
4
Expected Outcomes
• Comparison of 1st natural frequency and mode
shape of a single material rectangular plate
and FGM rectangular plate.
• Comparison of between the exact solution,
the smooth continuously graded FEA solution,
and the stepwise graded FEA solution.
