Today we will create textured medallions
using clay.

Ways of creating texture on clay medallions
• Impressing (plastic)
• 1.Use the stamps created last year.
• 2.Create designs and textures with tools.
• 3.Create textures from rough surfaces.
• 4.Use found objects from pockets and purses or around the room.
• Adding Clay
• 1.Try modeling the clay while it is plastic.
• 2.Attach ornaments to leather-hard clay with slip (sprigging).
• 3. Create a small sculpture to attach to the medallions
• Subtracting Clay (leather hard)
• 1.Incise a linear design by cutting into the clay.
• 2.Carve a low-relief design.
• 3.Pierce the clay to create designs through the disc.
• Colored slips (leather hard)
• 1.Paint designs using brushes and sponges.
• 2.Trail slip a design using the slip trailer
• 3.Scratch through a slip coat to the base clay (sgraffito).
• 4.Add slip to incised or stamped areas and wipe surface
slip (mishima).
• 5.Use wax resist to create designs with wax to repel colored slip.
Your assignment:
• Create 5 sketches of different types of medallions. Think of the techniques you
will use. (remember to do the plastic clay techniques first)
• You will need to create at least 4 clay medallions.
• Use at least 3 different techniques in your designs
• Be creative!
• You can glaze your medallions or use metallic spray paint or acrylic paint.
• You will take pictures of your sketches and medallions to upload to your website
