Transcript The Effect of Salinity on Irrigation Water Management

In salinized irrigated soils…
• Na salt affected…
Na causes bonds in
clay to break apart,
become like mush,
harden, seal off pores,
soil om breaks down
quicker, replaces Ca &
Mg on exchangeable
sites on clay micelles
and competes for K
uptake
• Soils remain more wet
due to Na affinity for
water taking away from
the plants uptake ability
• Sat. hydraulic
conductivity decreases
• Pores clog with
dislodged silt or clay
particles, bridging gaps
in narrow/fine pores
