Plotting Earthquakes
• Question 1 - Is there a pattern to the
location of earthquakes or do they occur
randomly over the globe?
This would be random:
Scientists look for patterns
There is a pattern!
• Earthquakes occur in narrow lines or broad
bands.
Narrow Line
Broad Band
Where do earthquakes
generally occur?
• 1. Along coastlines (South America)
• 2. In the middle of some oceans (Atlantic)
• 3. In lines or bands in oceans that are not
in the middle. (Pacific)
• 4. By some mountain ranges. (Himalayas)
3. Where do they not occur?
• In the middle of continents!
4. Suggest a reason for why
they occur where they do.
• Earthquakes happen along the edges
of plates where they rub against the
plate next to them.
(If the pattern
isn’t a coincidence,
What causes it?)
5. Where are the deepest
earthquakes?
• For earthquakes occurring on the edges of
continents, the deepest ones are inland.
• For earthquakes in the oceans, the deepest
ones are on one side of a broad band.

Inland
6. How deep are earthquakes that
occur in the middle of ocean basins?
