History
NIU was established in 1895 as the Northern Illinois State
Normal School. It did not offer its first classes until 1899.
It had 63 acres of land, with only one main building.
It was renamed Northern Illinois State Teachers College in
1921.
It was renamed Northern Illinois University in 1957.
There have been only twelve presidents of the school.
History
The school played its first football game in 1899, in which
it beat the local DeKalb High School team 16 - 10.
In 1940 they officially became the Huskies.
Basics
Northern Illinois University is a public research university
located in DeKalb, Illinois. It is a public co-educational
university. There are satellite locations all over the nation.
Acceptance rate: 56% (2013)
Enrollment: 21,138, 2nd largest in Illinois
The student / faculty ratio is 18:1
Average class size of 28 students.
Admissions
Applications must be submitted by July 15th for the fall semester with a fee
of $40.
The Average admitted student has a GPA of 2.85 - 3.47 and ranks in the
middle of his/her high school class.
The average ACT score is 20 - 25.
Students must have 4 yrs of English, 3 yrs math, including trig., 3 yrs science,
3 yrs social studies and 2 yrs foreign lang.
While they don’t do early admissions, they suggest you apply early in the fall
of your senior year for best chances at admissions.
Costs
Full time in state tuition is $4780 a semester.
Full time out-of-state tuition is $662 per credit hour a
semester.
Room and board rates range from $4835 to $6675 per
semester, depending on type of room chosen.
They offer a variety of private, school-based, and athletic
scholarships.
Rooming
There are five different residence halls, where student rooming arrangements
vary from having a single room to sharing a suite.
There are co-ed and single gender options.
All rooms include wifi access.
Some residence halls have floors devoted to quiet study, where there are
silent hours each day.
Newly enrolled students start picking halls and rooms on March 15th for the
next school year. They are matched with a student(s) by July with move in
happening the week before school starts.
Certain halls have alcohol free floors, and no student under 21 is allowed to
drink in the residence halls.
Meals
There are a variety of meal plans, including those for
students who live on and off campus.
Included in your room cost on campus is an unlimited
meal plan -- you can eat as much as you want 24 hours a
day at certain dining centers.
The dining centers accommodate al nutritional and
dietary requirements and provide healthy choices.
Academics
There are seven different college
that include several hundred courses
of study, ranging from engineering
to teaching, to arts.
There are 56 majors (90 emphases)
and 73 minors, with seven preprofessional programs.
Academics
They offer an honors program that includes smaller
classes, more interactive classes, special advising, and
specialized programming. It is a “program” within the
students’ larger program.
Academics
First semester freshmen whose GPA is 1.6 or lower will be
placed on academic probation. All other students must
maintain a GPA of 2.0 or better. Students on probation
must meet with the dean of their college.
Students who do not get off academic probation within
one semester are eligible for dismissal.
The School does offer study abroad and online options for
their students.
Activities
There are more than 300 student
organizations. Students can find a list
of these at the Student Life Building.
There are 40 Greek organizations,
including fraternities and sororities.
The school, along with regular
athletics, has 30 intramural sports with
a 27-acre outdoor intramural sports
complex.

Community
DeKalb, Illinois is in DeKalb County about one hour west
of Chicago.
Known as “Barb City” because it is the town where barb
wired was invented, it is home today to more than 44,000
residents.
There are many activities in town, including various fastfood and sit-down restaurants, theaters, and sporting
activities.

There are numerous festivals and other activities.
