Use of visual media by Primary
Age children in my school.
By Thomas Brown

Introduction
Hello, my name is Thomas Brown. I am in Year 5
and my research is about if children are
watching age appropriate videos, TV and
movies. I chose this question because I
wondered if my classmates were watching age
appropriate or age inappropriate visual media. I
know that some of my friends do watch age
inappropriate media and I wondered
how common it is.
Methodology
In my research I used stratified random
sampling.
My questionnaire used both open and closed
questions.
I asked 60 people from year’s 3,4,5 and 6. I
received no response from year 5.
Ethical issues
• It is important for research to be ethical because
you need to protect your participants from harm.
• I kept my research confidential by not mentioning
any people who participated in the research.
• I made sure not to put pressure on the
participant.
• I handed out consent forms before I gave out the
questionnaire which the participant had to sign
to say they were happy to take part.
Who responded to my questionnaire?

• Participants were allowed to tick more than
one option
• Most people ticked every option so this shows
that most people are accessing visual media in
all ways.
How often do you watch TV?
• This was an open question.
• The most popular answers were
‘once a day’ or ‘everyday’
• No one said that they do not watch TV at all
How often do you watch online
videos?
• This was an open question.
• The most common answer was either:
‘every day’ or ‘once a week’
• None of the participants said they did not
watch online videos.
How often do you watch films?
• This was an open question.
• The most common answer was ‘once a
month’.
• This suggest that the participants have less
access to film media than to television or
online videos.
What genre of online videos do you
watch?
• This was a closed question and here are the
results.
• Participants could tick more than one option.
• The most popular genres were comedy, action
adventure and animation.

laptop
computer

XBOX
ipod
phone
Do you watch age inappropriate visual
media?
Yes
No
• Most people said they didn’t, however 4
people said they do.
Conclusion
• The children who responded to my
questionnaire appear to have access to all
types of visual media most of the time and are
accessing it everyday.
• Although a small number of people admitted
to watching age inappropriate visual media,
most said they don’t watch it.
• From my research participants, it seems
children have access to visual media on a wide
range of electronic devices.
Conclusion
• It is more common in the children asked for
them to be accessing online videos or
watching TV than going to watch a film.
• Although children are accessing visual media
everyday and in many different ways, most
said they are only accessing and watching
media that is appropriate to their age group.
If I did my research again..
• If I were to do my research again, I might
carry out some interviews with my research
participants so that I could ask a follow up
question to get more detail about their about
opinion.
• This is because some of the answers on the
questionnaires were vague or didn’t make
sense.
If I did my research again..
• Many of my questionnaires weren’t returned
and if I were to get a response from Year 5 for
example this may have changed my results.
This might be another reasonswhy the
interview technique would be useful.
