• Any event that places a great demand on
resources—equipment, personnel, or both
• There is no set number of patients that
defines an MCI

Triage
• Sorting multiple victims into priorities for
emergency medical care or transportation to
definitive care

START Triage System
Four assessment areas:
• Ability to walk
(ambulation)
• Respirations
• Perfusion
• Mental status
Four categories:
• Red – immediate treatment
• Yellow – delayed treatment
• Green – minor (ambulatory
patients; the “walking
wounded”)
• Black – dead or dying
