PROMOTION

ACADEMIC STAFF PROMOTION
Minimum qualifications for instructional academic staff promotion eligibility
Four levels of instructional academic staff (1, 2, 3, and 4). All instructional
academic staff are considered Level 1 until promoted.
Staff must be in the present Level for two full years (or FTE) unless s/he holds a
recognized terminal degree in the discipline.
Compensation
Promoted instructional academic staff receive a permanent base salary
adjustment as follows.
Level 2: $1,100
Level 3: $1,550
Level 4: $2,000
PROMOTION FROM LEVEL 1 TO LEVEL 2
Possess/completed the master’s degree OR a bachelor’s degree plus a
professional credential recognized in the field as an advanced level of
competence.
Be in (at least) the third year of full-time equivalent service at UWWhitewater.
There is NO minimum time in Level 1 status for instructional academic staff
holding a recognized terminal degree.
An applicant holding a terminal degree when hired is eligible to apply for
Level 3 promotion after a minimum period of 3 full-time equivalent years of
service (regardless of previous level).
PROMOTION FROM LEVEL 2 TO LEVEL 3
Meet all requirements for promotion to Level 2.
Be in (at least) the sixth year of full-time equivalent service at UWWhitewater.
Served in Level 2 a minimum period of 3 academic years before the
effective date of the promotion to Level 3.
There is no minimum time in Level 2 status for those staff members holding
a terminal degree to apply for promotion to Level 3. A minimum of 3 fulltime equivalent instructional years of service is required to advance to
Level 3.
PROMOTION FROM LEVEL 3 TO LEVEL 4
Meet all requirements for promotion to Level 3.
Be in (at least) the ninth year of full-time equivalent service at UWWhitewater.
Possess a recognized terminal degree.
Served in Level 3 a minimum period of 3 academic years before the
effective date of the promotion to Level 4.
Applicants possessing a recognized terminal degree, who have a
minimum of 9 full-time equivalent instructional years of service (regardless
of previous level) may skip Level 3 and go directly to Level 4.

APPLICATION REVIEW
Applications are reviewed by the Instructional Academic Staff Promotions
Committee. See http://www.uww.edu/asa/committees/committees_descr for
a list of members.
Each category is rated
0 - no score, unsatisfactory performance
1 - weak job performance, some deficiencies
2 - acceptable, meets minimum requirements of job description
3 - satisfactory, fully complies with all aspects of the job description
4 - excellent, superior work, makes contributions beyond job description, makes
contributions to division, college and/or university
5 - outstanding, performance well in excess of the job description, makes
contributions to the profession outside of or beyond the university
APPLICATION REVIEW CONTINUED
Academic Staff Promotion Committee recommends promotion based
upon the following minimum composite scores
3.50 to Level 2
4.00 to Level 3
4.50 to Level 4
Recommendations are forwarded to the offices of the Provost and
Chancellor
Chancellor makes final promotion decisions
PROMOTION TIMELINE
Second Wednesday in November: Annual Deadline to Department Chair for Letter of
Evaluation
Fourth Wednesday in November: Annual Deadline to Dean of College for Letter of
Evaluation
Second Wednesday in December: Annual Deadline to Academic Staff Assembly (Chair)
February: Promotion Committee presents scores and recommendations to Academic
Staff Assembly
February: Assembly Chair forwards scores and recommendations to the Office of the
Provost and the Office of the Chancellor
Applicants receive notification regarding the promotion decision from the Office of the Provost
prior to the end of the spring semester.
