CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL
It
can take up to 10 years after
someone is infected to begin
having symptoms or know they
are infected. They may not know
unless they are tested.
CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL
The
age group with the highest
numbers being diagnosed with
HIV or AIDS are 20-24 year olds.
Given that it can take up to 10
years to know you have it, when
do you think these people got
infected?
IS HIV/AIDS CURABLE?
No,
there is no cure.
There are treatments available to
help control the virus, but they do
not cure the disease and must be
taken the rest of your life.
YOU CAN NOT GET HIV/AIDS FROM
Casual
contact, such as playing
sports, closed mouth kissing, water
fountains, toilets, etc. The virus is
not spread in tears, sweat or
saliva
Mosquitoes, ticks, or other insects
Giving or receiving blood
HOW IS HIV SPREAD?
One
of the most common ways
HIV is spread is through the use of
injection drugs/sharing needles or
syringes.
Sexual contact that puts
someone in contact with bodily
fluids of another person.
HOW DO YOU AVOID HIV?
HIV is found in three body fluids:
Blood, semen, and vaginal secretions.
 For someone to become infected, one of these
fluids has to enter the body through a mucous
membrane, a cut, or open wound.
 A mucus membrane is an opening in the body.
These are the mouth, vagina, penis, and anus.
 Avoid contact with blood or other bodily fluids
from any one else.

PROTECT YOURSELF

Know what puts you at risk.

Know about the personal history of anyone with
whom you are in an intimate relationship.

Do not let your blood or mucous membranes
come in contact with those of anyone else
unless you know that they have not done
anything to put themselves at risk for HIV/AIDS
and/or have been tested.
