Where to go with questions


Registration Procedures


When do I register for the New York Bar exam?

To register for the July Exam you register between April 1-30

You will be registering for the UBE
You will need an NCBE number. If you already took the MPRE you will have
this number. If you do not already have the NCBE number, there is a link on
the BOLE page that you can follow to create the account.
Registration Procedures [from BOLE site]

After creating the account, the applicant will receive an email with a Board of Law
Examiners identification number (BOLE ID) and a password, which the applicant will be
prompted to change. The applicant will then be required to complete an Account Profile
Page, which will require additional information including information regarding the
applicant's legal education. After completing the Account Profile Page, the applicant may
proceed to complete the online electronic application to sit for the bar examination (UBE)
in New York, provided that it is during the application filing period. The application filing
period for the February administration of the UBE is November 1 - 30. The application
filing period for the July administration of the UBE is April 1 - 30.
At the time of application for the UBE, the applicant will be required to certify that they
will satisfy the eligibility requirements to sit for the UBE under Section 520.3, 520.4,
520.5, 520.6 or 520.17 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals for the Admission of Attorneys
and Counselors at Law.”
What should I do if I have not received
confirmation of my eligibility for the exam?

If you submitted all of the required documentation and your application for your
Evaluation of Foreign Credentials were submitted by October 1, you should have a
decision in time for the exam. If you submitted after that, you may have a
decision, but there is no guarantee.

If you haven’t heard back yet, wait as long as you can – keeping in mind the April
30 deadline – before you submit your application and the $750. If you don’t get
your eligibility in time, you will lose the $750 payment.

It’s still possible that you will get the eligibility determination after April 30 but still
in time for the July exam, but it is not guaranteed.
What else do I need to submit besides the
application?
What other documents do I need to
submit?

NYS Bar Exam Applications and Forms can be found on the BOLE website, “Forms”
page. Although you must file your application by April 30, these supplementary
forms are due June 15.

Handwriting Sample

All students—even those who are eligible without the LL.M.-- taking the exam
must submit the Handwriting Sample Form. (see Forms page)

The Office of the Registrar will be sending an announcement listing the dates
and times when you can do the Handwriting Sample through them. Print the
form, take it to the Registrar’s Office during the designated times, and do the
writing there. Then you can send the form to the BOLE yourself or leave it with
the Registrar to submit along with transcript and Certificate of Attendance form.

You can also have the handwriting sample certified by a notary public or
another official authorized to verify or witness a signature.
LL.M. Transcript and Certificate of
Attendance

Students who are qualifying based on their foreign education plus LLM: (Rule
520.6) must also submit:

Your LL.M. Transcript. Arrange with our Office of the Registrar to submit your
LL.M. transcript to be sent to BOLE after graduation. Submit your transcript
request when you do the handwriting sample. The Registrar’s Office will mail it
to New York.

Your LL.M. Certificate of Attendance form from the BOLE website. There is a
sample form located on our website for your reference. The Registrar’s Office
will complete the bottom part of the form after graduation and send it to NY.
Timing

You can fill out and take the transcript request form and the LLM Certificate of
Attendance form to the Registrar’s Office at the same time that you do your
handwriting sample. The Registrar’s Office will then keep all of these forms
together to send on your behalf to the NY Bar.

The Registrar’s Office will send you an email with a tracking number when
they mail your documents to the NY Bar.

Person in Registrar’s Office who handles the NY Bar forms: Jamiece Johnson,
[email protected]
Help! It’s late June and I got a message from BOLE that the
Registrar did not submit my handwriting sample, certificate or
transcript!

Don’t Panic! Instead, email [email protected] or stop by the Registrar’s
Office during regular business hours. They will resolve it for you. If you made the
request, they will have it and information on when they sent all the documents to
New York.
Can I use my NY UBE score to waive into
the DC Bar without further conditions?

No. DC will not allow foreign-educated law graduates to waive into the DC bar solely
on the basis of the New York Bar/UBE exam.

You can transfer your UBE score to DC, but must also have met their educational
requirements for graduates of non-ABA approved law schools

OR, You need to be a member of another bar’s jurisdiction for the five years
preceding your application to waive into DC without taking the DC bar exam.
How do I get assigned to an exam location
for NY? Does it depend on when I apply?

Here is the information about test center assignments from the BOLE Website:
 July 2016 Bar Examination Test Sites

In accordance with Board Rule 6000.8 applicants shall be assigned to a test center in one of the four judicial
departments located in New York State. Test center assignments will depend on the sites available for a given
administration of the examination. All applicants will receive an email sometime after the application period
closes and they will be required to select and confirm their seat location. Only locations with available seats
will be listed in the email. Generally, applicants will be assigned to a test center in the department in which
they reside (at the time the application is completed); out-of-state residents will be given the opportunity to
select from Albany, Saratoga or Buffalo, based on which locations have available seats at the time the
applicant responds to the seating email. Once a location is filled, it will no longer appear in the email. If your
preferred location does not appear in the email you must select from the locations that are available. Please
do not call the Board's office - we will not maintain a waiting list for any location.
