Transcript The Black Death
The Black Death resulted in greater
economic opportunities for the lower
classes but also increased ethnic tensions.
The great loss in population improve the economic
opportunities for the lower classes
Governments tried to return wages and manorial
dues to what they had been before the Black Death.
Real wages went up for workers in cities, and peasants
were able to negotiate a reduction in their manorial
obligations since the lords needed a labor force.
Such legislation, like the English Statute of Laborers, was
met with resistance and often violence.
Ethnic tensions also increased in the face of the
Black Death.
During epidemic, it was common for Jews to be
blamed; many were murdered.
Concepts of ethnicity began to shape legislation.
