What are the main parts of culture?
What makes up culture?
• The way of life of a group of people
• All the ways people relate to each other
• Social organizations, rules, government,
values, beliefs, languages, arts, sports,
hobbies
People
• Ethnic groups share a language, a history,
customs, and place of origin
• Family: how they provide for
physical/emotional needs, food, shelter,
raise children, teach values, give love,
affection, sense of purpose
• Language: most belong to a larger language
family similar to each other
• Religion: family and culture glue, answers
important questions about behavior, life,
death, thoughts, actions
ECONOMY
• Changes to the environment to earn a living
• Finding uses for natural resources
• Economic systems decide: who / what will be
produced, the movement of goods, how
goods are shared
• Different economic systems exist today
USA: individuals decide, property privately
owned, or corporations
China: the government owns
property and large
factories
GOVERNMENT
• People needed to organize , rule and defend,
solve environmental problems
• Today we need to know :
how a government / leader is selected
it’s responsibilities
it’s power
rights of the people
ARTS and RECREATION
• Different kinds of artists: painters,
storytellers, poets, musicians, and dancers
• Leisure activities
• Sports
CULTURE REGIONS
• Areas of the world are similar in use of the
environment/have common culture
• Compare/contrast environments, use of
resources, ethnic groups, religion,
economic/political systems, arts , recreation
• Identify what is distinctive and different
about each culture
• Eight major culture regions
• How many regions will we study this year?
