Abraham Maslow
Born April 1, 1908
Published “A Theory
of Motivation”
Considered the Father
of Humanistic
Psychology
Conceptualized
Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow’s Theory
Based on the idea that
all people are
motivated to become
self-actualized
In order to get to one
point on the pyramid,
one must first fulfill
the level before it.
For example, the
second level of the
Hierarchy is safety. In
order to achieve this
level, a person must
first achieve the first
base level of meeting
their biological needs.
Real World Application
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can be used
as a therapy for a various array of patients
Often, depression and other negative mental
states can be a result of skipping a stage on
the Hierarchy pyramid
Criticisms
There has been little to no evidence serving
as proof for Maslow’s theory
After extensive research, many
psychologists have come to the conclusion
that the Hierarchy of Needs is nothing but
“a fool's daydream,” asserting that “there is
no possible way to classify ever-changing
needs as society changes.”
Carl Rogers
Born January 9, 1902
Considered to be
founding father of
Psychotherapy
Nominated for Nobel
Peace Prize
Originated idea of self
concept
Self Concept
The mental representation of who we feel
we truly are
He explained that internal conflicts arise
when we experience a discrepency between
our self concept and how we act
Rogers also believed that other people’s
interpretations of our worth, distort our self
concept
19 Propositions
List of 19 propositions that give an in depth
analysis on self-concept
