HYMNS OF THE DAY

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Fourth Mode:

O Merciful One, You came from on high, and condescended to Your three day burial to save us from suffering. You are our Life and our Resurrection. Glory to You.

Apolytikion for Sun. of the 7th Ecumenical Council in the Plagal Fourth Mode:

You are greatly glorified, O Christ our God, who established our Fathers as luminaries upon the earth, and through them led us all to the true Faith. O Most compassionate, glory to You.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode:

A protection of Christians unshamable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, please reject not the prayerful cries of those who are in sin. Instead, come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you: hasten to intercede and speed now to supplicate, as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Receiving Holy Communion

- We welcome to this celebration of the Divine Liturgy those Christians who are from other Christian Denominations and who are not fully united with us. Sadly, it is a consequence of the divisions in Christianity that we cannot extend to you an invitation to receive Holy Communion. Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is the work or action of the celebrating community signifying a oneness of faith, life, and worship of the believing community. Reception of Holy Communion by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist, and for which we must pray.

However, all present

are welcome to partake of the Antidoro (blessed bread) which is distributed at the end of the Liturgy Service.

EPISTLE READING

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Daniel 3.26,27.

Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers. Verse: For you are just in all you have done.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15

TITUS, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds: these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is per-verted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nico-polis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn earn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

Fourth Mode.

GOSPEL READING

Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council The Reading is from Luke 8:5-15

The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How do I become a member of the parish?

Membership in the Orthodox Church begins at baptism (Chrismation for some) and continues throughout our life. We are united with Christ through the sacraments, or mysteries of the Church and through our faithful offering of our entire selves to Jesus Christ. Our Archdiocese requires each parish to distinguish between voting members and non word and with His Church.

voting members. A voting member is over 18 years of age and turns in a signed stewardship commitment card, committing a portion of time, talent and treasure to the Church. The Archdiocese also requires the voting member to remain current through the year on their commitments. Keep in mind that true membership in the Body of Christ involves living according to His

Why must I commit to give a specific amount?

Please keep in mind that your stewardship of money is kept in the strictest of confidence. However, we do compile the amounts anticipated to better plan our budget.

What if I cannot fulfill my stewardship commitment?

During the course of a year, people’s circumstances change. Your stewardship is valued because it is made out of your love for God and His Church. Please do not be concerned if you are unable to meet your stewardship commitment—we are glad you are part of this parish.

CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP IS:

 Learning how to be a responsible and concerned caretaker of Christ’s Church; it is learning how to enjoy Church life and be happy in Church work, for in Her dwells the fullness of the Spirit of God.

 Our active commitment to use all our time, talent and treasure for the benefit of humankind in grateful acknowledgement of Christ’s redeeming love.

 Caring for the needs of others. Offering one’s self to God as He offered Himself to us.

What a person does after saying “I believe . . . “, as proof of that belief.

Devotion and service to God and His Church as persons, as families, as diocese/metropolis, as national Church and as Church universal.

We must ask, “One hundred years from now, where will our possessions be?” Our greatest blessing is our family. As Orthodox Christians, we are called to be stew ards of this great gift. If we are faithful to this calling, perhaps our Lord will say to us as he did to the faithful steward, “Well done good & faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).

The word “philoptochos” translated means “friend of the poor”. Officially, Philoptochos helps those in need and promotes the philanthropic endeavors of the Archdiocese. Unofficially, Philoptochos is the “heart” of every Greek Orthodox Church community. Comprised of women in all stages of life, the Taxiarchae Philoptochos supports our seniors, our youth, is an invaluable partner during the parish’s annual fundraising festival, and can always be called upon when someone is sick or needs a helping hand. Last year we donated to over 20 charities including the Philoxenia House, Hellenic Children’s Cardiac Fund, the Watertown Food Bank and the Boston Diocese Camp.

We invite you to join our ministry.

Just take a moment to reflect on how a strong church community enriches your life and your family’s. An active Philoptochos goes hand in hand with a strong church community. We all lead busy lives as we strive to fulfill our roles as mothers, daughters, spouses and working professionals, but we need YOUR help to help others. Please take that first step to join us and, remember, your commitment level is totally up to you.

Becoming a member is easy.

Simply fill out the form above and forward it with a membership donation to Philoptochos via the church office. Greetings to all!

"ENJOY OCTOBER, COLUMBUS DAY and the OXI Celebration !"

Good news: According to an update from

HHT Nicholas Nikas

of

District 7

our

"Socrates"

team of 3 -who won the

HHT Trophy

last year will re-try for a 2nd win this year ! Details are being currently finalized. Due to intervening sad events (see below) and logistics we decided in our last meeting to postpone the

Celebration

and

Benefit fundraiser

(for the Metaxas Scholarships) in mid-

October, 2016.

Instead of conducting the event, we felt it would make more sense for our members and members of the

Taxiarchae Watertown community

to support the

AHEPA Metaxas Scholarships

by sending us donations in any amount towards this cause. On

a very sad note for our AHEPA #406 Watertown chapter

to all in the Watertown Church community, AHEPA Secretary, we informed our members and all the Watertown Community that our Brother, old friend and well known

Thanasis Vulgaropulos

suffered a massive stroke in

mid-August

.

Thanasis

is currently at the

Kindred Hospital, 1515 Commonwealth Ave

which is in close proximity (past

St Elizabeth's Hospital

on Warren St and an immediate right turn on the Commonwealth access road up the hill.) He will have a very difficult rehab and will need visitors to see him and give him support in this very hard period of his life, so we urge all who know him to visit him and show their support. Perastika! In addition, we announced the passing (on Aug. 31) of our

Br. Panos Spiliakos

who had served also as President of the

Pan Macedonian

association. AHEPA officers conducted the

customary ceremony in his honor

at his wake. To all our AHEPA members: Please, pay your

Membership Dues ($70.) for 2016

if you have not done so or in need.

.

Thanks to all members who have already paid theirs ! Please, recruit friends or family members who may be interested in joining AHEPA. All are welcomed ! New innovative ideas are needed to sustain and expand our chapter membership and contribute to AHEPA’s causes. Please, let us know if a brother is sick Fraternally,
