Dedicated lifts connect bus park no. 1 (Piazzale Calcigni) and car park P.9 to Piazzale
Lo Stradone and Porta San Francesco (Saint Francis Gate), both leading to the
old town. From Porta San Francesco take Via Basilicius up to Piazzetta del Titano.
There, the State Museum is worth a visit. Along Via Eugippo, starting from Piazzetta
del Titano, is the so-called Cava dei Balestrieri (Crossbowmen’s Quarry), which
was dug into the rock and now hosts the main shows arranged by the San Marino
Crossbowmen’s Federation and other big events.
A little further up, is one of the most beautiful panoramic sights of the Republic: the
so-called Cantone (Corner). From there visitors can enjoy breathtaking views over the
sweet hills of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Adriatic coast.
Next to the Cantone is a modern cable car which leads to Borgo Maggiore. As you
continue along Contrada del Pianello, you will come to Piazza della Libertà (Liberty
Square), where is the Public Palace. This square is dominated by the imposing local
Statue of Liberty, donated to the Republic by Countess Otilia Heyroth Wagener in
1876.
Going up from Piazza della Libertà, you will reach the Basilica of Saint Marinus. Next
to the Basilica is the small Church of St. Peter. Leaving the Basilica behind, take
Contrada della Pieve and Contrada dei Magazzeni and continue along Salita alla
Rocca, leading to the First Tower or Guaita.
Heading towards the Second Tower (Cesta), you can walk along the enchanting
Passo delle Streghe (Witches Path), which offers wonderful views over the Adriatic
coast. After a visit to the Museum of Ancient Weapons inside the Second Tower, go
down Salita alla Cesta to reach the Cava Antica (Ancient Quarry). Continuing your
descent along Contrada Santa Croce, you will reach Piazza Garibaldi (Garibaldi
Square), dominated by an imposing statue dedicated to the great hero. The collectors
of ancient coins and stamps will not miss the opportunity to visit the Philatelic and
Numismatic State Society on the same square. Via Basilicius will lead you back to
Porta San Francesco.

Mount Titano is a large terrace offering a 360-degree view over the surrounding
territory: from the Alta Valmarecchia and the Montefeltro area to the Adriatic coast
and further away up to the Croatian coast, when the sky is clear. A breathtaking
landscape which changes into a unique spectacle in the hours of sunset.
The local nature is that of a land suspended between the sea and the countryside,
with the shades of green of olive trees, vines, pines, firs and oaks blending with the
colors of local crops and flowers along scenic trails.
Do not miss an unforgettable walk in the open air along the profile of Mount Titano
with a view over the Adriatic coast.

The Republic of San Marino has a long history, which, according to tradition,
originates from a small Christian community, formed in the 3rd century AD around the
charismatic figure of Saint Marinus. The stone cutter of Dalmatian origin chose Mount
Titano as an ideal place to devote himself to solitude and prayer. Later, a Roman
noblewoman named Felicissima donated the Mount to Marinus to thank him for the
miraculous healing of her son.
Over the centuries, the people of San Marino built themselves a solid identity, based
on the common values of democracy and peace, which is still recognised despite the
small size of the Country. Today, San Marino, the oldest Republic in the world, plays
an important role in the assembly of the United Nations and the Council of Europe.
The institutions guiding and characterising San Marino are ancient and unique in the
world. The two Captains Regent (the first ones we know of were appointed in 1243)
hold their office for six months and their institutional functions correspond to those
of a head of state. Every year, an impressive ceremony of investiture regulated by an
ancient protocol takes place on 1 April and 1 October.
“San Marino is one of the world’s oldest republics and the only surviving Italian citystate, representing an important stage in the development of democratic models in
Europe and worldwide. (…) The Site, for its universal value, deserves protection for
the benefit of all mankind”. With these words the World Heritage Committee inscribed
San Marino on UNESCO World Heritage List on 7 July 2008 thus acknowledging its
vocation for independence and freedom and its importance in international relations.

STATE MUSEUMS AND MONUMENTS
Public Palace – Piazza della Libertà: It was rebuilt in a neo-Gothic style in
1894 according to the project by architect Francesco Azzurri over the remains of
the pre-existing “Magna Domus Comunis” and restored in 1996 by architect Gae
Aulenti. It is the most representative building of the State since it is the seat of the
Captains Regent (heads of state), the Great and General Council (parliament) and
the Government of the Republic. It also hosts the most important civic celebrations.
Changing of the Guard: Changing of the Guard: the Guardia di Rocca is on duty
at the Public Palace where the Changing of the Guard is carried out. The uniform
worn by these soldiers is very attractive: dark-green double-breasted jacket with
white and red braiding, red trousers with a green band, headgear (kepi) with a red
pom pom and white gaiters.
Times: from 9.30am to 5.30pm every hour on the half hour (from May to September).
State Museum – Piazza del Titano - It is housed inside the ancient Palazzo Pergami
(Pergami House) and exhibits important archaeological and artistic remains about
the legend of Saint Marinus, the history of the Republic and its institutions. Precious
finds dating to the Egyptian, Etruscan, Roman, Hellenic and Iapygian Ages are also
on exhibition. Not to be missed is the collection of San Marino ancient coins and
medals dating from the period between 1864 and 1937.
First Tower (Guaita) – Salita alla Rocca
It is the first fortress built in San Marino and dates back to the 11th century.
Subsequently enlarged and remodelled, it achieved utmost splendour in the 15th
century during the last war fought by San Marino against the Malatesta family from
Rimini on the side of the Dukes of Urbino and the Pope (1463). Officially chosen as
the seat of the Guardia di Rocca in 1754, it was used as a prison up to 1975.
Second Tower (Cesta) – Salita alla Cesta
It is the second fortress built in San Marino probably around the 13th – 14th century.
Situated on the top of Mount Titano (at 750 metres above sea level), it offers
breathtaking views. Presently it is the seat of Museum of Ancient Weapons, which
houses finds dating back to the period between the 13th and the 19th century.
Third Tower (Montale) – Salita al Montale
It is the last fortress built on Mount Titano around the 13th century. It was used as a
guarding post looking over some stone trenches which do not exist anymore. It was
a prison as well. Its entrance gate, which is situated at a height of about seven metres
from the ground, was a typical architectural pattern of prisons of that age. This tower
is not accessible inside.
St. Francis Museum and Art Gallery – Via Basilicius
It is housed inside the cloister of the homonymous church erected in 1361. It exhibits
an important collection of frescoes and paintings by the main exponents of several
regional schools between the 15th and the 18th century. It also displays the sacred
furnishings which were once used by the local friars.

SHOPPING
San Marino offers a number of opportunities for any kind of shopping thanks to a
large and widespread network of shops. Thousands of items and souvenirs turn the
old town centre into a fascinating open-air shopping centre amidst ancient streets and
breathtaking views of incomparable beauty. In the surroundings, there are also shopping
centres, specialist shops and outlet stores which offer a wide range of different products.
GASTRONOMY
The love and attention for the products of our land have made local cuisine a simple
art, yet one rich in traditions renewed over the years. Unique flavours, a wholesome
cuisine combining traditions with quality to keep alive the huge rural heritage of our
country and catering for even the most discerning gourmets.
Among fist courses we can include different types of hand-made pasta such as
tagliatelle, strozzapreti, ravioli, cappelletti and passatelli. Then we have roast
meats, good bread, piadina, extra-virgin olive oil, accompanied by red or still white
wines. Among the desserts are bustrengo, caciatello, ciambella to be enjoyed with
a glass of Moscato or fine dessert wines.
CURRENCY
The present currency is the Euro. Since 2002, San Marino has had the right to mint
euro coins with effigies of San Marino at the Italian mint.
Base metal coins range from one cent to two
euros. San Marino also mints 5 and 10 euro silver coins, 20 and 50 euro gold coins,
and gold “scudi” for collection. Since 1974, gold coins with legal tender status only
on the territory of San Marino have also been minted.
FLAG AND COAT OF ARMS
The San Marino official flag is formed by two horizontal strips, one white and the
other light blue with the coat of arms of the Republic in the middle. The official coat
of arm is a shield with three hills and three towers with feathers on top. On the two
sides, there are two green branches of oak and laurel tied up together by a ribbon
with the word LIBERTAS in black capital letters. On top of the shield is a crown,
symbol of sovereignty
