FATHER JAMES’ MESSAGE
Last week, Presvytera, our granddaughter, Sophia and I traveled to the church of St.
Sophia in Winter Haven for the service of Great Vespers, to celebrate the parish’s feast day
and our Sophia’s name day. It was important to expose our little one to the story of her saint.
By Orthodox tradition, the feast of a name day is more important since it remembers a
spiritual birth in contrast to a birthday, which is of lesser importance since it signifies a physical birth. What makes the physical birth meaningful is our spiritual birth at the time of Baptism. The celebration of the name day is unique because it connects us with our Baptism and
the positive attributes of the saint for whom we were named. That saint becomes our patron
saint and by knowing the story of their life, we attempt to emulate their saintly qualities.
As we traveled for two hours, through what seemed like a parking lot of traffic on I-4,
the lyrics of the song “Three Coins in the Fountain” came to mind. The song comes from the
movie of the same title, and tells the story of three women working in Rome with great aspirations for their future. I enjoy the old movies, especially films from the 1940s that especially
wanted to entertain and lift people’s spirits during WW II. We laughed hartily at the comedies
and swayed rhythmically with the musicals. Great movies!
There is another story, though, about three young women who lived in Rome, and it is
much sadder. They were the daughters of St. Sophia: Faith, Hope and Love (or Charity), who
also had aspirations for the future. Being Christians in pagan Rome, their future was ended
abruptly as they were sacrificed for their unchanging faith in Christ. Their martyrdom is also
celebrated on September 17, along with their mother, who witnessed their deaths firsthand.
Too often, the stories behind our saints’ feast days are sad ones, but we celebrate with
joy. I remember how we celebrated at the Seminary, which functioned, when I first enrolled,
like a military academy. There was a strict order about when we attended services and had our
meals in the refectory. When the feast of St. Demetrios was to be celebrated, I was informed
that since there were many students with the name, Demetrios, we were to share the cost and
provide a treat at dinner. Following the Great Vespers and at the conclusion of dinner with the
traditional singing of “Να’ες Χρόνια Πολλά...» we would serve ice cream, or a special desert or
even a glass of wine. Even when the Seminary became Hellenic College during my senior year
and the regimentation was relaxed, we continued the tradition of the name day treat.
Years later, while serving in my first parish as Proistamenos in Portland, ME, many
people would open their homes to celebrate a particular name day. This tradition continued at
Holy Trinity in Indianapolis, IN. One year, there were five homes open on the same evening to
celebrate the feast of St. George and the locations were spread from one end of the city to the
other. We began our visitations early, along with the other guests, who were also traveling
from home to home. Our final stop was the home closest to ours, but it was late, and of
course, there was an overabundant table of food again. By this time, our boys, elementaryschool aged, were extremely tired, but I reminded them that we had to wish «Χρόνια Πολλα»
to Mr. George and were only minutes from home. Great memories!
So on this long drive, inspired by my own trip down memory lane, I explained to my
granddaughter that though her saint’s story was sad with death and destruction, we rejoice
because she received the ultimate reward of a place in the Kingdom of God. And while we
don’t have movies full of songs and dance to get our minds off the sadness, as did her propapou when he was witnessing for the freedom of our country by risking his life, we can find
happiness in the story of St. Sophia, who witnessed for the faith. “Be happy that her sacrifice
is called a ‘heavenly birthday’,” I told her. “Be happy that you can ask her to pray for you to
our Heavenly Father. Be happy that because of her witness for Jesus, like the witness of propapou for America, we have the freedom to be Greek Orthodox Christians in our country.
That’s why name days are so special!” Χρόνια Πολλά!

put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. But I call God to
witness against me—it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we
lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I
made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to
make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I
might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you,
that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of
heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I
have for you.

t that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. And he saw two boats by the
lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one
of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down
and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put
out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled
all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done
this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their
partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so
that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying,
"Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with
him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you
will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and
followed him.
HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION)
Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is
only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who
have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the

CYRIACUS THE HERMIT OF PALESTINE
This Saint was born in Corinth in 448. He went to
Palestine to the Lavra of Euthymius the Great, but
because of his youth was sent by Saint Euthymius to
Saint Gerasimus; after the death of Saint Gerasimus he
returned to the Lavra of Saint Euthymius. Later he
took on a more rigorous life of asceticism in the wilderness of Natoufa, where there was nothing to eat
except the exceedingly bitter wild herb called squills,
which, however, through his prayers, God made sweet
for him and his disciple. He lived 107 years and reposed in the year 555.
was the daughter of Paphnutius of Egypt. Forsaking
her father and his wealth, she renamed herself
Smaragdus, and pretending to be a eunuch of the imperial palace, she dressed herself as a man and entered a
monastery of men where her identity remained unknown until her repose 38 years later.
ΟΣΙΑ ΕΥΦΡΟΣΥΝΗ
Η Οσία Ευφροσύνη έζησε στα χρόνια του Θεοδοσίου
του μικρού (περί το 410), ήταν μοναχοκόρη και πολύ
πλούσια. Ο πατέρας της Παφνούτιος ήταν ο
πλουσιότερος της Αλεξάνδρειας και μαζί με τη σύζυγο
του διακρίνονταν για τη θερμή πίστη τους στο Θεό.
ΌΣΙΟΣ ΚΥΡΙΑΚΟΣ Ο ΑΝΑΧΩΡΗΤΗΣ
Δώδεκα χρονών η Ευφροσύνη έμεινε ορφανή από

Ευφροσύνης είχε καταλάβει ο Θείος έρωτας. Ο γάμος
ιερατικό, λοιπόν, γένος ο Κυριάκος, σε νεαρή ηλικία
και οι κοσμικότητες θα της ήταν εμπόδιο να αφιερωθεί
πήγε στα Ιεροσόλυμα και από εκεί στη Λαύρα του
συστηματικά στην ελεημοσύνη και στην υπηρεσία του
Μεγάλου Ευθυμίου. Εκεί, ο Μέγας Ευθύμιος, τον
πλησίον. Γι’ αυτό κάποια μέρα, αφού διαμοίρασε τα
έκανε μοναχό και τον έστειλε στον ασκητή Γεράσιμο. υπάρχοντά της στους φτωχούς, έφυγε κρυφά από το

διακονία που πρόθυμα πρόσφερε σε όλους. Έζησε στο

ζήσωμεν ἐν τῷ νῦν

THANKING GOD
As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a new way
of seeing things – a new way of life. Stewardship is
obedience to the greatest commandment to “love the
Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.” We
are called to bring ourselves and others to commit
our lives to Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us to
the joy of knowing him personally and profoundly.
Thus, the question is not, “How much do I give to
stay in the club?” or “What are the dues?” The real
question we need to ask ourselves is “How do I thank
God for my many blessings?”
LEAVE THE REST TO GOD
You cannot do everything, but you can do something.
God wants you to do your best and leave the rest to
him. Saint Theofan said, “Exert all your strength, but
rest your concern for success on God.” The Lord
doesn’t expect any more from us than what we have
to offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that
we do our very best for Him. We do our best and
leave the rest to Him.

ST NICHOLAS KITCHEN
St Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry which
provides a hot meal and fellowship to those in need.
Volunteers for cooking, serving meals and cleanup
between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm - along with monetary donations for the purchase of food - are welcome
and needed. Remember the book of Matthew 25:3536: “...For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you
gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked
and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison
and you came to me.” Your assistance helps feed approximately 100

October 14 & 15, 2016
Join us for a unique and educational event, where scholars from throughout Florida and the nation will gather to discuss various aspects of Greek genealogy research and the history of Greek
immigration to the U.S. All members of the public are welcome to attend and to offer their experiences and perspectives during the discussion. This free event will take place on Friday, October 14, at the Tarpon Springs Cultural Center (101 S. Pinellas Ave) and Saturday, October 15 at

Mission Statement
To aid the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the
imprisoned, the widowed, the handicapped, the victims of disasters, to undertake the burial of impoverished persons and to offer assistance to anyone who may need to help of the Church through
fund-raising efforts.
PHILOPTOCHOS HELPS BUILD GREENHOUSE
Our Chapter was chosen at the Clergy-Laity Conference to come up
with a project that will benefit an agency in the community. We have
decided to collaborate with GRO GROUP by helping with the of building of a greenhouse. The Tarpon Springs Gro Group is a hands-on
learning experience for adults with disabilities. The curriculum includes plant cultivation, landscaping, and nursery operations. The
Gro Group offers a plant sale Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am
to 1:00 pm. The Gro Group Garden Center is located at the Tarpon
Springs Recreation Center on Walton Avenue. As we begin the planning stages of this special project, we will need to help of all our parishioners. If you have any questions, please contact us.
SOCIAL SERVICES
From July 2016 to August 2016 we have distributed a total of
$2,823.51 to help with rent, mortgages, utilities. This was made
possible with the love and support of our community.
