SPORTS FUNDING IN THE UK

OCR National in Sport Level 3

Positive

National lottery money available for excellence and mass participation

Negative

Lottery money needs to be evenly distributed Some clubs are very wealthy, e.g. Man UTD Since turning professional in 1995 Rugby Union can compete on more even financial terms with Southern hemisphere sides Large sums of money can be made through sporting links with the Media There is not financial resources, smaller clubs can go bankrupt When ambition outweighs financial resources, smaller clubs can go bankrupt Having won the Olympic 2012 bid the government has put more money into sport If a performer fails to qualify for lottery funding there are other sources available Limited government aid (in comparison to some other countries) means that commercialism has a greater role to play in British sport. This can lead to lack of control by clubs over their own management and destiny National Governing Bodies (NGB’s) need to be careful when ‘selling’ their sport for commercial reasons. They can lose their autonomy The complexity of funding sources has led to an imbalance of provision for different sporting activities and for individuals on different levels of the performance pyramid 5/1/2020 Previous Next
